Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay's career has taken a turn south.

Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations. Mermaids and gator shifters swim in the bayou. Spirit bottles light the front porches after twilight. Dragons light the fires under crayfish pots.

Jillian's first assignment for the League could be her last. Mystic Bayou is wary of outsiders, and she has difficulty getting locals to talk to her. And she can't get the gruff town sheriff, Bael Boone, off of her back or out of her mind. Bael is the finest male specimen she's seen in a long time, even though he might not be human. Soon their flirtation is hotter than a dragon's breath, which Bael just might turn out to be....

I've read a couple pretty decent reviews so I had this on my maybe list for a while. It finally popped up as a freebie for the Romance Package so why not? I could use some shifter lovin'.

The story follows Jillian who is given a big assignment to interview and review the lifestyles of Mystic Bayou who house both human and supernatural beings in relative peace. She is to write up how these folks manage this. The world is on the cusp of discovering the magic folks exist so the League wants to get as much information as possible because they know humans will need it so they don't freak out. Reasonable for sure. Along her journey, she will meet Bael who is the sheriff of this town and doesn't trust her a lick. Of course, a serial killer comes striding along to make the townsfolk worried and make Jillian look cursed.

There was so much story then I expected and I was happy! It was just a romance. This is a story about a town who is so very different. I also like the mystery part. It added an extra layer to the story and it worked well. It was pretty easy to guess WHY the killer was killing who they were killing, but I couldn't figure out the who. Lots of suspects, but then at the same time...not so many. Hard to explain.

The rift mystery is making me more curious.

I liked Bael even though he was a grump. I adored the mayor the most. He was a big, fluffy, lovable bear. And I mean that figuratively and literally. CUTE! I am glad his book is the next one. He deserves lovvvveeeeee.

Jillian was okay. I do think she was super naive in some situations, but once you understand her upbringing you understand why she lacks certain common sense and people skills. She is good at interviewing. But some things made me scratch my head.

I want more of Sonya!! She was a hoot.

The ending bit annoyed me. I mean...it makes sense. But I was annoyed...maybe I'll warm-up to the big twist at the end there in the next book. We shall see. Felt like a cop-out to be honest. Booo! I mean - I was glad they got together and etc, etc. I didn't like the added bit. Wah.

The narrators were good. I liked the female voice more than the male. Can't say why, but I wasn't a huge fan of his. Mmm. Something in the tone? Maybe because he seemed to be trying too hard? Not sure. But I am glad they had two different voices. I like when they do that.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I love this world and I wanna live in this town!! I WANT PIE! *shakes fist* I already downloaded book 2. I'll be diving into that soon. I'll give this 4 stars.
