As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she’s an unlikely candidate for even a servant’s position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood’s mountain temple.

But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda’s life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah’s ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.

Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death—and her growing affection for Deven—Kalinda has only one hope for escape, and it lies in an arcane, forbidden power buried within her.

Not sure why but I really like the cover!

The story follows Kalinda who is an orphan and being raised by the Sisterhood. She likes her quiet life of seclusion and prayer. A visitor comes and it turns out it is the Rajah and he is on the search for his 100th wife. Shesh...100? And that doesn't count his courtesans. But yes, he picks poor Kalinda and away she goes to court. Not only does she have to deal with vipers of her fellow wives but she has to face the danger of the rank tournament. Through all of this, she is dealing with strange fevers and a growing love for Deven.

Kalinda just wants peace and quiet. I would too. Screw being "claimed" by a man of this world. Especially by the rajah. Ugh terrible world. And the Rajah is a big jerk. Pitting his women together...to kill each other for rank. Sick. All during this, he is hunting down people who have powers.

I liked Deven. He was sweet and kind. Poor guy is put in a dangerous situation loving Kalinda.

The story was a fun read. It was YA, but it didn't feel too YA. There was blood and there was kissing. Maybe older YA. A nice balance.

There was a huge lull in the middle, but I kept trekking along and it got good. Things exploded and I could not put it down!

One part made me super mad! I am still mad! I hope Kalinda finds a way to fix it! I wanted good things to happen to a certain character! But no. >_>

In the end, this was really good. There was that lull and one part that made me super mad, but overall? I did like it a lot. I am curious about book 2. I shall stamp this with 4 stars.
