Friday Flash Fiction: Saturday Edition

Every Monday Dottie over at Tink's Place posts a picture and on Friday we share a story to go along with the picture. The story has to be about 350 or so words.

Happy Saturday! I would have this posted yesterday, but I was called away from mid-writing to join a girls' night with some friends. ^.^ Had fun though!

Face Forward, Never Look Back
by: Carole Rae

Face forward.

Never look back.

Crashing waves.

Flying red hair.

Face forward.

Never look back.

Screaming of crows.

Beaming full moon.

Face forward.

Never look back.

It may have been a quick peek back, but the dark ones under the water seen and grabbed a hold of her legs. She screamed and screamed, “I didn't mean it! I didn't mean it!”

Face forward.

Never look back.....

With a start Holly awoke. Her red hair was matted to her face and sweat beating down her face. She wiped the sweat out of her eyes and tried to take a deep breath, “It was only a dream. Only a dream.” No matter how many times she said it to herself, she couldn't remove the sense of dread she felt.

As soon as her heart started slowing down, a knock on the door gave her another jump, “Holly...the wedding starts in three hours and we still have to get your hair done!”

“Alright!” With a deep breath, she tried to forget the dream and forced herself out of bed. She had three hours before the long awaited wedding was to begin, “Oh dear....”

Three hours later, Holly was a sight for sore eyes. Her long golden hair was piled atop her head in lovely curls. She barely fit her green and white dress, but with much straggle and sucking-in her maid of honor managed to zip it up.

“Oh! You are the epitome of lovely!” Exclaimed her sister. All the braids-maids nodded in agreement. Her father was speechless, but beaming from ear to ear. However, she didn't feel like a bride. She didn't want to do this anymore. It was now reality! I'm really getting married, she said to herself.

There was a knock on the door, “Ready ladies and gent?” One of ushers questioned.

“As ready as I'll ever be.” Murmured Holly.

“Alrightie then! Let's get this show on the road!” The usher exclaimed.

Everyone took their respectful places in line and waited for their cues. First went out the Maid of Honor and the Best Man. Holly grimaced as her time to shine came closer and closer. She whispered to her father, “I don't think I can do this Papa.”

He smiled down at her, “You ain't getting cold-feet are you?”

Holly nodded.

“You love Neil don't ya?”

“With all my heart.” She touched the locket she always wore.

“Then what is the issue?” She shrugged.

Finally it was their turn to make their way down the aisle. Her father had to pull her from her solid stance. Everyone around them stood and Holly wanted to cry. I can't do this. I can't do this. She looked down at Neil. He was fabulous looking in his tux. His pitch black hair was flawless as usual and his green eyes were filling with tears. She loved him. Oh she did, but she couldn't help this dread she felt.

Suddenly she tore away from her father's arm and without another thought she spun on her heels and fled. Gasps tore around her, but she didn't care. The sense of dread began fading and fading with each running step. She reached the stairs and continued running. However, 8 stairs away from the bottom her heeled foot snatched the bottom of her dress. She yelped as she plunged down the rest of the stairs. Once her back hit the ground, she looked up saw a woman dressed in green hover over her.

The lady smiled, “Silly girl. Now Neil is mine.” The lady took a small dagger and plunged into Holly's chest.

Holly couldn't manage more than a gasp as the lady stabbed her 8 more times.

Face Forward.

Never look back.
