'The Hobbit' News: Tauriel

It's been a while since I gave any news about the movie 'The Hobbit' which is based of the book by Tolkein. Right now they are in the mist of filming, so we have a while before the film actually makes it to local theaters. My inner nerd is SO pumped for this film! However, there is a little issue that is sparking up some major criticisms from the Nerd World: the character named Tauriel.

Fans of the book know that there was no character named Tauriel, but this character is going to be in the movie. Peter Jackson and his team created this character to add to the story. The person playing Tauriel is the lovely Evangeline Lilly, who played Kate in LOST. This character will be in both of the films. Here's the interview from Evangeline Lilly about her character:

“She is a warrior. She’s actually the head of the Elven guard. She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly.

She’s not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved. Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding that I had expected it to be. There’s a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it’s a little more pressure.”

Hmmmm, I'm not 100% sure what I think about Tauriel. I do believe that she was added mainly to add a woman to the film. It is a very dude book. If I was a movie maker I would probably add a woman character to the film also. Yes, nerd Carole is a little upset, but the realistic Carole is understanding and approving. RC and NC both agree that Peter Jackson and his crew are standing on a very thin line. Tauriel can make the movie even more AWESOME or she can, well, make the film a little cheesy. My final verdit and opinion will be held until I actually see both films myself. ^.^

What do you think?

I do get it, I mean Arwen was not supposed to be in the books that much either, the movies needs women

I am distinctly ruffled. I would NOT add a woman character just for the sake of adding a woman character. That is silly. Absolutely silly. I was always so pleased with Peter Jackson &co's rendering of these stories...hopefully they don't mess it up. :(

B, exactly! However did they have to give her such a big role as Head of the Guard? I thought that blond guy was the Head of the Guard. The one that took the Fellowship to Galadriel? IDK

Susan, I can see both sides! I am a little upset that they are adding her. Perhaps it'll work out in the end. We'll see I guess.
