Evelyn Preston’s future once looked perfect—until her wealthy father was caught in an embezzlement scandal and took his own life. Alone and struggling to pay her college tuition and bills, Evelyn finds a job as a waitress at the ultra-hip nightclub Excess, where she used to have more in common with the privileged private-school clientele than her fellow staff members. But something attracts her to the sexy six-foot-four bouncer and underground MMA fighter Mateo Tres Santos. Although they’ve led different lives, their troubled pasts bonds them in both survival and love.

Mateo is ex-army who wound up in prison for assaulting the man who harmed his sister. Now he’s feeling the same protective impulse for this petite blond waitress. When Evelyn experiences a panic attack at the club, Mateo comes to her rescue. And when Mateo is wounded shielding her from a brawl, Evelyn returns the favor and comes to his aid.

As their attraction intensifies, Mateo is determined to find out what nightmares are lurking in Evelyn’s past—even if that means tackling his own to save her.

I adore this author and I've been meaning to read more by her. I've been curious about this one.

The story follows Evelyn who was once perfect. She lost it all when her father was caught embezzling and then took his own life. All her friends and family decided it would be best to distance themselves from her. Now alone she has to work and get herself through college. Mateo is ex-army who was put in person and kicked out of the army for assaulting the man who harmed his sister. Things happen and they find comfort in each others company.

I was unsure about Evelyn at first. I was worried she was going to be a perfect character. However, she is far from perfect. She has a lot of demons and something happened to her that is haunting her. I also liked Mateo. Poor guy! That dad of his needs to be locked away forever.

There was an instant attraction between the two, but it took a while for the two to realize they need each other. They have so many demons to battle.

This wasn't as good as the other series I read by the author. It was just missing some of that magic. The characters were fun to read, but they were just not as good. However, this wasn't bad at all. I did enjoy it! It was really sad at parts. I felt bad for both of them.

The ending was okay. I did want to see more. I did like the little twist there. I did smile.

The narrator was...eh. She wasn't bad. It just took me a while to really get into the story and grow accustomed to her voice.

In the end, I'll stamp this with 4 stars. I liked the story and the characters. Not as good as the other series. But it was a good read.

Stamping the MC/Bad Boy on the BINGO chart! Woot!

I remember liking this one, but not as well as others later in the series and the spinoff O'Brien series. Bummer the narrator was only so-so.
Yeah for the first BINGO square.
