Summary:
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.
Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.
Review:
This was picked for book club but I have been curious about this for a while. I never picked it up for whatever reason.
Here we have Atticus and his Irish wolfhound sidekick. Atticus has been living peacefully in Arizona and running his bookshop. He may look like a 21 year old tattooed Irish fella, but he's actually 21 centuries old and a Druid. He's been hounded by a very angry Celtic god that wants Atticus' sword for centuries. The god is tired and ready to end it and take what he wants. The only way Atticus can win is using all his power and use the help of his dog, a goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf lawyers, a bartended possessed by a Hindu witchy, and some luck.
The first 1/3 of the book had me yawning and ready to be done. Not sure why, but I really struggled to get through it. However, it did get better for me and I enjoyed the rest of the story!
Atticus is sort of a dick and bleh. I get he is supposed to be acting like a 21 year old, but grow up man.
The battle was a little easy but it was fun.
The ending was nice but a little creepy that he got his dog a harem essentially. Ew.
I loved the bartender!
But I did have fun with all the different lore mixing. Different gods and stories and cultures. It was a lovely blend. I am curious about checking out book 2. Hopefully it'll make me fall in love. Some of these UFs take a couple of books from my experience.
All-in-all, I did like this. Some issues but I am willing to check out book 2. Some fun bits and a very cool world that this author crafted. In the end, I think I'll stamp this with 3 stars.
ONE WORD SUMMARY: Cool

This was our Read-along in 2023. There were things I liked and things I didn't. Your rating is what mine was the first time I read. I had only read the first book before the Read-along. I came to enjoy the humor of Oberon and the dogs quite a lot. I hope you enjoy further books.

I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobooks. Luke Daniels is amazing and his voices are fun. He brings a great energy to the series, which really picks up after this book. I've listened to the entire series twice now.
Look at you, going to old school UF. I miss the olden days
Anne, I hope the next is better!
I might go that route for book 2.
