Book Review: The Red Queen

Author: Philipa Gregory
Title: The Red Queen (Cousin's War #2)
Genre: Historical Fiction, War,
Pages: 382
First Published: 2010
Where I Got It: My Shelf (Krogers)

"The second book in Philippa's stunning new trilogy, The Cousins War, brings to life the story of Margaret Beaufort, a shadowy and mysterious character in the first book of the series - The White Queen - but who now takes centre stage in the bitter struggle of The War of the Roses. The Red Queen tells the story of the child-bride of Edmund Tudor, who, although widowed in her early teens, uses her determination of character and wily plotting to infiltrate the house of York under the guise of loyal friend and servant, undermine the support for Richard III and ultimately ensure that her only son, Henry Tudor, triumphs as King of England. Through collaboration with the dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret agrees a betrothal between Henry and Elizabeth's daughter, thereby uniting the families and resolving the Cousins War once and for all by founding of the Tudor dynasty"

This is the second installment of the Cousin's War series by Philippa Gregory. However, it can stand alone perfectly fine. Each book has a different heroine, so reading out of order is okay. I'm glad for this, because I have NOT read 'The White Queen' yet. I plan too, but this cover drew me to it and I couldn't resist it. Also, it was on sale at Krogers. Oh well. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Ms. Gregory's viewpoint of Anne Boleyn or Elizabeth I, I'll give her a chance in other areas of history; just like I did for this one. However, when I picked up this novel, I was a little worried I would be confused, because I'm not that knowledgeable about the War of the Roses (aka Cousin's war).

Firstly, I give a nod to Philippa Gregory because she didn't assume that every reader is a historian on that war. Secondly, she wrote this series, so you could read all the novels out of order and NOT get confused. I love when series are like that. ^.^ Just these points made me like the novel!

I loved how Philippa Gregory presents each character. She presents them with real human flaws and she even shows their positive points too. Even the main characters show their flaws AND this "heroine" of novel is very, very flawed! I couldn't stand the woman! If I had known her, I would have probably smacked her in the face. She was so annoying BUT I give Ms. Gregory major creds for presenting this lady as she was. She showed her as selfish, arrogant, self-conceded, independent, cold-heart, destiny-driven, holy, and proud. She would have given ANYTHING for her son the throne of England.

I have not read one review that stated that they "loved" this character. No one likes her, but many love the book. How is that possible? Well, because the book was fantastic! I couldn't get enough of it either! It took a little bit to get into though, but after a certain point I could barely put it down.

The only thing I didn't like about this book, was Lady Beaufort. That woman got on my nerves. In my head I called her "The Bitch". She did have some positive points, but she kept comparing herself to Joan of Arch and she thought that she was God's "chosen" and everyone should bow down and kiss her feet (well, she never really stated that, but she probably secretly wanted that). I think I would have preferred the story to narrated by someone else, but it was interesting to hear Henry VII's mother's view point.

All-in-all, I really liked this book. It makes me want to check out the rest of the series. Maybe I'll even read more books set during the War of the Roses time period. This has become my second favorite of Philippa Gregory's novels, even though I hated the main character. Out of five stars I grant this one 5 stars. Yayy!

Favorite Character(s): Jasper Tudor and Lord Stanley (why? I don't know, but I loved that guy for some odd reason.)
Not-so Favorite Character(s): LADY MARGARET and Richard III

Childhood Wednesday Part VI

~Instead of posting Wildcard Wednesday posts I want to try a new series of postings. Don't worry Wildcard Wednesday won't be gone forever, but I want to try this. Lately I've been thinking a lot about my childhood. My childhood was far from perfect, but without what I experienced I would not be the person I am today. That's the same with all of us. Without our experiences as kids, we wouldn't be who we are today.

With this new posting series, I want to explore what highly influenced me as a kid. I sort of base this from 'Top Ten Tuesday' and the '30 Day Picture Challenge' from Facebook~

Happy late Wednesday everyone! My internet was being a rebel  all day, so I didn't get a chance to post this. That's life or so they say. So did everyone have a good Wednesday? I did.

This week I'm going to share what were my favorite 5 games to play as a kid with my friends and family. Like board games/card games. I got this idea from FSN.com's post about 1990's game flashbacks and me being a '90s youngster fits perfectly! I loved to play board games/card games. My parents didn't like playing as much as I did...they still don't...but I would (will) bugged them until they submitted to my child cuteness. ^.^ Shall we begin?

#5
Guess Who. It was sort of a rip off of the game Clue, but instead of guessing where/how/who you just had to guess who just what their face looked like. It was a lot of fun.

#4
Go-Fish was everyone's favorite! I was pretty epic at this game...and still am. I challenge you all! Haha.

#3
Snakes and Ladders! I had a love-hate relationship with this game, because I could never win! I don't ever recall winning. I was very competitive as a child, that's one reason why my parents hated playing with me....oh well.

#2
Sorry!/Pokemon Sorry. I preferred my Pokemon sorry board, but I played with whatever one was available. I was and am pretty awesome at this game! It's a classic!

And at #1
Yahtzee! I have loved this game since I could play board games! It's a little pointless and a game of utter luck, but it's amazing! If you never have played this before...PLAY! You will enjoy it.

What board games/card games did you enjoy has a kid? If you want to check out last week's posting about musicians click HERE!

Top Ten Tuesday: Trends I'd Like to See More/Less Of

~Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.~

This week's top ten list is about trends that I would like to see more of or less of. I'm going to break the list down to 5 and 5. Five for trends I want to see more of and five for trends I'm getting a little tired of. Enjoy!

Trends I Want to See More Of:

1) Mythology type books. You don't see many books that include Greek, Roman, or etc mythology plots. I haven't read many, but I wish there was more!

2)Ancient Civilizations. I wish there were books set in Ancient times. Like Egypt or Greece or China or whatever. I love these type of books, but they are so hard to come across.

3)More Stories Focusing Around Native American Folktales/Stores. I would love to read stories that the Elders would tell around the fire. I get so tired of reading about depressing tales of the fall of the the "old ways". I would love to read more books focusing on the "old ways". If that makes any sense.

4)Strong Heroines. I honestly do get tired of men always having to come to the rescue. I would actually like to see more of women standing up and fighting the good fight.

5)Werewolves/Shapeshifters. ^.^ I agree with Lisa from The Garden of Books that werewolves/shapeshifters are sexy. I would like more books about them!

Trends that need to hide in the shadows for a bit:

1)Vampires. I love vampires as much as the next person, but I'm so tired of all the vampire romances. I need a break please and thank you.

2)Perfect Characters. Let's get real, not everyone is perfect! Please authors, I'm tired of the perfect characters make them flawed and real. Please and thank you.

3)Huge Books that NEVER seem to end. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a big book, but I've had a couple this year that just never seemed to end. I just feel like the author had a couple versions of a conclusion and they couldn't pick one, so they threw them all in. Please don't make the conclusion twenty million pages long. End it. Please and thank you.

4)Jumping from view point to view point too much or without letting you know. I hate being confused on which character is narrating now. Or those books where EVERYONE narrates the story at some point. Please give some warning when you're about to change, like wait until the next chapter to change narration. Please and thank you.

5)Less Bad Boys, more nerdy/dorky guys. I love Bad Boys, I do, but I also think nerdy/dorky guys deserve to see the light of day too. Make it proportional! Please and thank you.

I hope you enjoyed my list! What would you like to see more/less of?

Music Monday & Movie of the Week Announcement

Happy Monday to all!

Okay! First of all, I want to say happy birthday to my cousin Morris. It's a little ironic that his birthday fell on 'Music Monday' because he loves music. He especially loves the King of Rock, the one and only Elvis Presley! Well, who honestly doesn't love Elvis? If I had a lot of money (which I don't) I would totally have a professional cake made and given to him, but since I'm a poor college kid dreams and pictures are all that I have to give. Here's the cake I would probably have made for him:

Now, on to the music!

First, here's my favorite song by The King:

This song (in my mind) is Lady Margaret Beaufort's theme song. She has a strong sense of destiny and fate. She KNOWS her child will rule England and she is anointed by God. Well, this is how Phillippa Gregory presents her in 'The Red Queen'. I will admit, I don't have much knowledge about Lady Margaret. The song is "Destiny" by Lenny Kravitz:

And here's 'Addicted to Quack!" by the hilarious Barely Guys/Barely Political. =D Enjoy:

AND......the next Movie of the Week is.......'The Young Victoria'. I've seen little bits and pieces, but I've never actually sat down and watched the movie. I'm really excited!

I hoped you enjoyed this week's selection of videos. ^.^
