A youthful indiscretion has cost Lizzie Poole more than just her honor. After five years living in exile, she’s finally returning home, but she’s still living a secret life. Her best friend, Ria’s dying wish was for Lizzie to assume her identity, return to London, and make amends that Ria herself would never live to make. Bearing a striking resemblance to her friend, and harboring more secrets than ever before, Lizzie embarks on a journey that tempts her reckless heart once again . . .

A committed clergyman, Geoffrey Somerville’s world is upended when he suddenly inherits the title of Lord Somerville. Now he’s invited to every ball and sought after by the matchmaking mothers of London society. Yet the only woman to capture his heart is the one he cannot have: his brother’s young widow, Ria. Duty demands he deny his feelings, but his heart longs for the mysterious beauty. With both their futures at stake, will Lizzie be able to keep up her façade? Or will she find the strength to share her secret and put her faith in true love?

This was immediately intriguing when I first picked it up. It sort of fell figuratively in the back of the book piles. However, I finally got to.

The story follows Lizzie who was best friends with Ria. Ria had run away with Edward to Australia. Things had happened and Lizzie agreed to return back to Ria's family in England and take up the role so mends could be made. How? To take the place of Ria who couldn't come back. Geoffrey is the only surviving son and has taken up the title of Lord Somerville. When his brother's widow, Ria, comes back into his life he can't but fall for her even though it is wrong.

So many secrets! We wouldn't have a story, but I was annoyed. Why did Lizzie have to lie? I'm sure if she came out with it saying, "Hey - I'm Ria's best friend and she is dead. Her last will was to help me out because I don't have a family!" Maybe they could've just all taken up the facade and just made her Ria. I don't know, but I was just waiting for the secret to blow up in Lizzie's face. Of course it does.

The beginning dragged on and on. There really wasn't anything interesting going on. A lot of the same copy-paste paragraphs. Lizzie having a hard time with the facade and feeling guilty. Geoffrey annoyed with himself for liking Ria/Lizzie.

It did get interesting again as soon as a certain character popped up. Oh snap. Everything started to unravel slowly. It had me hooked again!

Then he resolution happened. Ugh. It was so unrealistic! Yes, yes, we all know HR can be like that and they do end up together. I was happy they figured it out, but. But. No. No no noo. Too easy a solution. And no one of the ton will believe the story. Le sigh.

I am curious to read book 2 because I want to know how the ton react to this reveal. The next one is about Lizzie's brother.

Overall, I did enjoy the majority of the book however I had some issues with the slowness and the ending. Bummer. Not a bad story overall though but I did have some issues. Maybe I'll like book 2 more. We shall see. I'll give this 2 stars.

I'm curious to see what you think of book 2 now

I've read a few stories where a big secret is the crux of the story and its just a matter of waiting for the ax to fall.
Ooh, too bad on the ending being too airy fairy.

copy paste paragraphs?! Sounds very lazy
