My second run with this book. It was decent last time, but I was a wee thing then, so I thought to give this another shot.
Oooooh Jekyll and Hyde. Such a classic story and very dark. I love the symbolism that this horror shows. Everyone has the capability of evil and goodness. Generally, people believe it is up to the person on what they want to display and do. But is it? Do people really have a choice? Or are some people prone to evil, while others prone to goodness? Jekyll was a good man, but was he really? HE was the one who wanted to dabble in potion-making and continued to do so even after he knew what had happened. Was a part of him more evil than good? Or was he so intrigued by his creation, that he couldn't help it? Sometimes the want of knowledge can lead down to dark and evil paths. Should we leave well-enough alone? Or should we risk evil arising?
There is so much going on and so much to discuss with such a simplistic story. That is why the classics have and will remain classic. They are stories that will live on even beyond us, because they touch a part of us and make us think and think and think. There will never be any answers since the author is gone and buried.
Now - let's look at the story as it is.....
This was very simplistically written with a complex story. I really wanted more out of this. I wanted more story and to understand both Jekyll and Hyde. I feel that I didn't get the full creepiness and horror-feeling that I have with some of his past stories. Sure, it did have soooommmme creepiness and horror, but I felt that he went light with this dark story. There was so much more he could've done.
The characters were interesting, but everyone NOT Jekyll and Hyde were very 2D and just there as a prop. Jekyll and Hyde were the stars and the author wanted you to know that. Those two have enough dimensions for fifty people (okay, okay, over-the-top BUT still).
The end made me clap. Very good. I will not spoil anything.
I do recommend reading this, because 1) it is a classic horror story 2) This is the TRUE story of Jekyll and Hyde (and it has many differences than all the variations and adaptations - so be true and read this) 3) It's a quick read for the Halloween season and finally 4) Makes you think. Was this book of the year? No, but it is a must read and I would read it again. I shall stamp this with 3 stars.

Oh such a good classic! It was actually the first book I read in English - the original version I mean.
I love this one even though I completely agree with you - the novel could do with some better secondary characters.
Ana, it is a good classic. And yes, the characters on the side were meh.
