Saturday Scribbling Challenge #1

This is a fun little writing challenge that Blodeuedd and I have come up with! We each challenge each other with the selected theme. The first challenge was a photo challenge! Of course, feel free to join in and share your own stories with the selected theme of the month!

First....my challenge to Blodeuedd:

Fairy by Blodeuedd

The summer evening was warm. A faint breeze made her relax ,and she shut her eyes. The grass was comfortable and she wanted to lie down and just sleep. But no, she has a mission, she had already been here for hours. She had gone from hot, to warm, to now, a perfect temperature, but she was tired, hungry and thirsty. Still she sat where she sat, listening, waiting.

A ruffle through the grass made her look. Only a rabbit this time. She sighed and continued. If nothing happened soon she would go insane. She could not sit here forever. The sun would go down, it would get dark, it would be dangerous.

Why could they not arrive? She needed them! She needed to catch a fairy. Not tomorrow, not in a week, but today.

So there she sat. Listening, waiting. A mouse ran past. A hawk circled above her head. She heard a horse in the distant. She worried about the wolves sighted nearby. She worried what her family would say if she did not make it home in time for dinner.

One fairy, she wanted to catch just one.

“Alyssa!”

Damn it. She pretended not to hear and knew they would not look here. They would look around the house. In the orchards, in the stables, in the gardens behind the house, in the pastures. Then the woods, and then this lovely meadow behind the woods. The only reason she had heard her father was because she knew he would always call her name when he brought the sheep from the hills. Just in case she was where she should not be. Though he never looked, because he knew. Of course he knew.

There, there one was. She got excited and then, yes, she got one! She lifted up her net and saw the tiny fairy. She smiled and watched its pretty wings. It looked like a tiny human, just fiercer, taunt lines in its face, pointed ears, strange hair and colored skin. It looked tasty.

She held her net tight as she went home. Tonight she would eat fairy meat. Mmmm, she loved the taste of fairy meat in the evening.

Now, Blodeuedd's challenge to me:

Snow and Hills by Carole Rae

Once upon time there lived a young warrior god who fell in love with a human. She was a beauty. She had a strong and noble heart. The god would visit her in her dreams. He would hold her closely and speak sweet nothings to her. By morning he would have to slip away from her dreams and return back to world of the gods.

The young girl enjoyed her dreams, but she could not live in that fantasy, so she decided to find a husband. It was not hard to find one, because she had many suitors. Soon her engagement to a local farmer was announced and the god who loved her was outraged.

He demanded to be allowed go to Earth and claim his love. The other gods merely laughed and denied him. They told him that it was an impossible love, because she was a mortal and would die in the blink of an eye. He was outraged, but he bowed down to their wisdom.

Years passed and the young god watched his beloved from his heavenly throne. She lived a full life, but not necessarily a happy one. The man she married treated her decently, but he never whispered sweet nothings, never held her close, and never truly loved her like the god had. The couple bore many children, but she always felt like something was missing. The god watched her live her life and continued to visit her in her dreams.

Then one winter day, the now old woman laid down to sleep. Just like normal, the young god slipped into her dreams. In her dreams, the old woman became young again. However, there was sadness in her eyes.

The god asked, "What is wrong my love?"

"I feel like this is the last time I will see you." She replied with a heavy sigh.

"What do you mean?" He chuckled. He brushed her a strand golden hair behind her ear.

She stepped away from his embrace, "The underworld is calling for my soul."

"What?"

"My time has come. I can feel my soul being torn away."

"No! No! I will not let the underworld have you!" He grabbed her shoulders and pulled her to him.

"I'm sorry. Goodbye my love. Thank you for loving me even though it was just a dream." She began to fade away among the drifts of snow. He scrambled and sobbed as she fell threw his hands like snowflakes. She was gone. A part of his soul died as the dream ended and he was forced to return to reality.

The other gods did not laugh when he returned. They felt pity and empathy for the young warrior god who had loved and lost.

"I go to the mountains...do not follow me. Do not call for me. I will be one with the snow and the hills." Not a single god or goddess tried to fight him and beg for him to stay.

For all eternity he remained in the hills with the snow. His soul and heart always yearning for his one and only love.
