A Very Pink Cast that Book

~'Cast That Book' is a weekly meme created by moi. This is just something I came up with, to share everyone who I would cast if a certain book became a movie. I got the idea from storycasting.com, so check them out! My secret dream is to be a casting director and this allows me to live it for just an hour or two. Anyone can join! You don't have to pick thebook I picked. Any book, any genre! However, I would LOVE to check out who you casted, so share the linkie to your post down below.~

Happy Friday! I usually post these on Saturdays, but I doubt I'll be around on Saturday sooooo I'll do it now. ^.^

Book Review: Butterfly Swords

Author: Jeannie Lin
Title: Butterfly Swords (Tang Dynasty #1)
Genre:  Historical Romance, Action, Drama

Pages: 288
First Published: October 1st, 2010
Where I Got It: Borrowed from library

"During China's infamous Tang Dynasty, a time awash with luxury yet littered with deadly intrigues and fallen royalty, betrayed Princess Ai Li flees before her wedding.
Miles from home, with only her delicate butterfly swords for defense, she enlists the reluctant protection of a blue-eyed warrior....
Battle-scarred, embittered Ryam has always held his own life at cheap value. Ai Li's innocent trust in him and honorable, stubborn nature make him desperate to protect her--which means "not" seducing the first woman he has ever truly wanted...."
This is the second book I've read by Jeannie Lin. I actually read the second book of the series first. Haha, oh well.
Anyways, this was a good read. I did like it, but took me a while to get into it. I'm not sure why, but it felt slow to me at times. Perhaps I was waiting for Li Tao to make his glorious entrance. ^.^ Yes, there was a lot action and sword play and kissing and touching, but to me it felt really slow. Slow, but good. I'm not making any sense.
Reading the second book was a double-edged sword for me. On one hand it made this book more interesting to see Ai Li's side of the tale that Li Tao told. I had wondered why Ai Li fled and how she met the "barbarian", Ryam. However, it ruined some aspects for me. In my mind I kept defended Li Tao and whatnot even though he was suppose to be the baddie of this book. It ruined the mystery of him. I would recommend to read the first book before divining into the second book.
I really liked how Jeannie Lin really focused on honor and family in this one, because those are highly Chinese morals and I'm really glad that it was so hard for Ai Li and Ryam to get together, because of Ai Li's strong sense of honor and family whilst Ryam is just a wanderer and doesn't really have morals but to his legion back west. It was really an interesting and original tale.
Even though I really liked this book, I couldn't help but compare it with the second of the series 'The Dragon and the Pearl' which I simply adored! What really lowered my like of this book was my love for Li Tao, there was no other real reason but that. It's pretty sad.
Overall, I liked this book but not as much as the second one. It was a fun adventure and I did like Ai Li and Ryam, but just not as much as Suyin and Li Tao. I would say to read this one first before venturing to the second book of the series. However, this book does stand well as a stand-alone book, because there is no real cliff hanger and I liked it. After reading this, I want to re-read the second book. Haha. Well, I would recommend this those that love a good historical romance, for those looking for a different read (this was set in Tang Dynasty China), and for those that like a little adventure mixed in with their romances. In the end, I grant this 4 stars.
Favorite Character(s): Ai Li, Ryam, Adrian, Li Tao, and Suyin.
Not-so Favorite Character(s): Emperor Shen (I liked him more at the end)

Friday Flash Fiction

Every Monday Dottie over at Tink's Place posts a picture and on Friday we share a story to go along with the picture. The story has to be about 350 or so words.

Happy Friday everyone! How is everyone doing? The heat is killing me! I only got 2 hours of sleep last night. Ugh! Hopefully tonight I'll get a good night of sleep. Today wasn't as hot, but I fear that once the sun sets the heat will remain. Mmmm.

Anyways, this week's story was a random thought while I was working. Luckily I didn't forget about it! For some reason I think this might be my favorite story out of my 'The Man in Her Dreams' series. I really like the Faery, even though she's a baddie and likes to curse random people. Without further ado, here is the 4th installment.  Here is the first part and the second part of the story and the third part :

The Man in Her Dreams part 4 - A Double Curse
by: Carole Rae

"What the HELL is going on here?” Demanded Hanna again. Adair looked away, ashamed. The Faery had sent that necklace as a joke. The faery was a heartless wench and loved to tortured him. The Faery had sent him that necklace with a note saying 'Here's a piece of paradise.' Would Hanna even believe him if he told her the truth? She would probably run away screaming, but he had to take the chance.

“I'll tell you everything, Hanna. Just...just try to keep an open mind.” Adair kneeled down beside Hanna, but he avoided her emerald eyes as if she was Medusa herself. With a deep breath he told her everything. He told her about who he was, who the Faery was, and about the curse. To his surprise Hanna didn't interrupt or mutter a sound of disbelief.

Once his tale was done, he took a gamble to look in her eyes. He was surprised to see contemplation and not horror. Moments passed as they stared at each other, the silence was eating away at Adair's soul. Say something for the love of God.

Finally, “Oh...well...I'm not sure what to say right now.” Hanna looked down at her hands.

“I know its a lot to take in and actually believe it. But its all true. This room and all these things are proof enough. The thunderstorm that sent you here also proves my tale! For some odd reason she added you to my curse.”

“Adair,”He sucked in his breath, “I believe you...but its a lot to take in. I-I just need to go to sleep and allow my poor mind to absorb and make sense of all of this.” She heaved herself off, “I'm sorry I yelled at you...good night.”

He wished her sweet dreams and she left him alone in this room of Faery jokes. All these portraits of himself mocked him. All these odd knick-knaks and small gifts was a sick, sick jest at his immortality. Why? With a moan of self-pity, Adair stood up and went back to his room to try and catch some sleep too.

As he made his way down the hall, he took a momentary stop by Hanna's room. Silence. He wondered what she was doing. Was she already asleep? Was she looking out the window, lost in contemplation? Was she thinking of him? Adair sighed and continued on his way to his own room of misery and self-pity.

Kicking upon the door, he flopped on his bed and buried his head in his pillow. Damn that fucking Faery. Without warning he passed out. Oh no. He opened his eyes to discover the Faery brought him to the forest. Why couldn't she just leave him alone? Adair wasn't surprised when the Faery appeared out of nowhere and wrapped her arms around his neck. She was just as beautiful as the day he met her with her long brown hair and sparklingly silver eyes. However, hatred filled his heart instead of lust. The Faery smiled, “Oh Adair...I feel your hatred towards me, but I have good news to give you my beloved.”

He grunted, “Your good news is never my good news.”

With a laugh, the Faery touched his cheek, “Your curse may be broken.”

Adair's heart stopped, “What?”

“Your curse may be broken, Adair. Would you like to know how?” She playfully tugged on his hair.

“Tell me!” He grabbed her by her arms and gave her a quick shake.

“Hanna,” She smiled, “can help you. However, you need to win her heart. Once her heart is yours and you take true loves kiss then this curse will shatter and turn to dust. But...if you go on this quest to win her heart and you fail to gain her love you will curse her forever.”
Adair glared and asked, “What do you mean?”

Without prompting or any words, the Faery lead Adair to a tree that looked like a woman. The woman-tree seemed to be caught in mid-scream and in mid-run.

“If you fail, Adair, this will be her fate. She will be a tree in the middle of my rose garden.”
