Bookish Blog Hop Partah & Some Poetry

These Bloody Days Have Broken My Heart
by: Thomas Wyatt

Who list his wealth and ease retain,
Himself let him unknown contain.
Press not too fast in at that gate
Where the return stands by disdain:
For sure, circa regna tonat.

The high mountains are blasted oft
When the low valley is mild and soft.
Fortune with Health stands at debate.
The fall is grievous from aloft.
And sure, circa regna tonat.

These bloody days have broken my heart.
My lust, my youth did then depart,
And blind desire of estate.
Who hastes to climb seeks to revert.
Of truth, circa regna tonat.

The Bell Tower showed me such sight
That in my head sticks day and night.
There did I learn of of a grate
For all favor, glory, or might,
That yet circa regna tonat.

By proof, I say, there did I learn:
Wit helpeth not defense to yerne,
Of innocence to plead or prate.
Bear low, therefore, give God the stern,
For sure, circa regna tonat.

Bookish Blog Hop Party & News

Hey everyone! I have a bit of news to share before jumping into the Bookish Blog Hop Party. ^.^

I was given the honor of being part of Tink's Place. Dottie, the owner and my friend, has handed me the reins for the famous Flash Fiction meme! For those of you that have never heard of this meme, then you have missed out! It's a lot of fun. Every Monday a picture is presented and by Friday you post a short story with the minimum of 350 words to go along with the picture It's a lot of fun. It defiantly gets the creative juices flowing.

Here's my cute little signature that I'll be using:

Yes, that is Fawn one of Tinkerbell's fairy friends. ^.^ Since I love Tinkerbell and themes, Dottie and I decided to keep the theme and I have my own little fairy avatar too. If you want to check out my first post click HERE and click THIS and be transported to Dottie introducing me to her followers.

Happy Tuesday! As you may know, I finally accomplished a goal of mine....I read all of Jane Austen's novels! I still have her short writes to read, but oh well. Now I'll give my official opinions of the Austen world. Woot woot.

-Mansfield Park
-Pride and Prejudice (tied for third)
-Northanger Abbey (tied for third)
-Emma
-Sense and Sensibility

Favorite Heroines from Best to Least:
-Elizabeth Bennet
-Fanny Price
-Anne Elliot
-Catherine Morland (tied)
-Elinor Dashwood (tied)
-Emma Woodhouse
-Marianne Dashwood

Favorite Men from Best to Least:
-Captain Wentworth (*drools*)
-Mr. Darcy (^.^)
-Colonel Brandon
-Edward Ferrars
-Henry Tilney
-Mr. Knightly
-Edmund Bertram

Jane Austen is one of the best authors ever. After reading her novels, the evidence is clear as day as to why she is so highly remembered. Her novels has lasted so long and they'll still be remembered for hundreds of years to come. Hopefully my future kids will love her like I do.

Next on my list? I'm going to watch a version of 'Emma' and 'Northanger Abbey'. Now I'm going to re-watch 'Jane Austen Book Club', which I watched a while back, but missed some of the inside jokes because I had only read a couple of the novels. Exciting!

I live with my husband Dave and dog Sammy. My two children are grown and I have two grandchildren. I love to watch people and that has helped me with my writing. I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.

I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories I could write I found I like mystery/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
My book titles are: Bones, The Darkness Within, Meghan’s Legacy, Shadow Chaser, Witness, Secrets and Lies, Legacy of Murder, The Unknown Son, The Prophet, No One to Hear You Scream, Bradbury Inn, Murderous Intent, Wrong Number, Fall from Grace, The House on Berkley Street.

Book Review: To Catch a Wolf & SMPH

Author: Susan Krinard
Title: To Catch a Wolf (Historical Wolf #4)
Genre: Historical Romance, Fantasy, paranormal
Pages: 369
First Published: September 2nd, 2003
Where I Got It: Borrowed from library

"When crippled Denver socialite Athena Munroe sees werewolf Morgan Holt in a traveling circus, she will have to fight tooth and nail to keep her passion for him at bay-or discover her own extraordinary destiny.."

This is the fourth book in the Historical Wolf series by Susan Krinard. However, you can read this as solo book, because it has nothing to do with past books. I personally haven't read #2 and #3 yet, so worry not.

Well, I'm going to divide and conquer this review:

The Good

  • I simply love that Susan Krinard likes to use handicapped heroes and heroines  I especially loved this one, because Athena was bound to a chair.
  • I loved all the side stories, they didn't overwhelm the main story, but it added to it.
  • I loved how there wasn't really a "bad guy" in this one. Everyone has done good things and bad things. Neill, Athena's brother, may have been a jerk in a lot of instances, but it didn't make him a baddie.
  • The whole circus thing was pretty cool. I've never read a book where the majority of the cast was from the circus.
The Bad and the Ugly
  • Mmmmm, I hate to say this, but it was rather boring. Yes, there was a lot of drama going on, but it was just.....gah.
  • The ending was SO unrealistic  and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at it. Yes, it was suppose to be the big reveal and everything was suppose to come together and shock the reader, buuuuutttt.....mmm.
  • Athena annoyed me. Yes, she was stuck in a chair but her self-pity really grated my nerves.
  • Morgan....mmmm......that is all.
my face when Morgan opened his mouth

The Conclusion
All in all, this book was okay. It fed my werewolf need, so I'm content. It wasn't as good as the first book, but it was entertaining. I defiantly want to read the other books in this series. Susan Krinard is a good author and I enjoy how well she blends fantasy and historical together. I would recommend this to those that love werewolfs, historical romances, and circus people. Out of five stars I stamp this novel with 3 stars. It is more like 2.5 but I don't give decimals so I round.

Favorite Character(s): Caitilin, Ulysses, Athena (at the end), and Harry.
Not-so Favorite Character(s): Athena (at the beginning), Morgan, Neill, Cecily (stupid girl), and Tamar

A Late Thursday Book Teaser

Thursday Book Teaser is a Carole-version of all the other book teaser memes out there. Every Thursday, I'll share a little tease of a book I'm currently reading. I'll randomly pick a page or I'll give some random number and flip to that page. I'll just share a few sentences to try and tease you. Anyone can join in! Just remember ...no spoilers! By the way this picture I found on Google and edited it myself.

So sorry for this being extremely late! The automatic posting thing failed *shakes fist at blogger* and then for some reason my internet wasn't working ALL DAY, so I couldn't get on and fix it. Gah! *shakes fist at internet*

Well finally got this post to look right. I do apologize to Holden Robinson for it looking crappy last time. I sent the email I received to a different email account and then downloaded it to me computer. Then I had to edit each line and blahblahblah.... Volia! It now looks fine. Damn technology.

Well, here's the book excerpt of Becoming Mona Lisa by Holden Robinson. This was given to me from CM:

"My mother once told me if I looked at my reflection long enough, my
features would become obscure, and I would gradually become a Picasso. I never
asked how long it would take, this transition from me to something I didn't
recognize. It may be minutes for some. In my case, it took a few years.
 Thirty-four to be exact.

I guess it wasn't that I'd become a Picasso. I guess I'd
become more of a pooka. A pooka is an invisible creature, like the rabbit in the
old movie, Harvey, starring the incomparable Jimmy Stewart.

The distinct difference between me, and the pooka known as Harvey, was
Harvey had always been invisible. I hadn't. I'd simply disappeared. Over time.

I watched Harvey repeatedly, long before I understood the similarities I'd one
day share with the big, white rabbit.

I loved the rabbit, but I loved Jimmy Stewart even more. Every year, at
Christmas, I'd hunker down with my mother, father, and my beloved Aunt
Ida, and we'd watch It's a Wonderful Life, and string popcorn for the tree. Aunt
Ida would watch through cataracts, I through tears, and by time the credits rolled, I'd be
emotionally spent, and Aunt Ida would have half a bowl of Orville Redenbacher's
sewn to her skirt.

My mother, ever the teacher, would turn the movie's message into a lesson, one
of many she'd pass along, and it was her voice I'd most often heard in my head
as I battled my darkest days.

“Wear good shoes, Mona.”

“Wear good underwear, in case you crash your car, Mona.”

“Never miss an opportunity to tell someone you love them, Mona.”
I guess two out of three ain't bad. I wear good shoes, and good underwear.
It's the third one I screwed up.

Big time.

I was thinking of this as I pulled into my driveway on a Sunday evening, after
an uneventful shift at WalMart. My old Jeep emitted a familiar groan as we
pulled into the driveway that was once smooth, and now felt like driving a Radio
Flyer down a washboard. I shut off the ignition and we both sighed. The old truck
and the unhappy wife. I labored up the sidewalk onto the porch. My feet crossed
the fifty-year-old timbers, and the wood moaned beneath my treading. A
stranger's reflection stared back at me from the single-pane window, as my hand
sought the rusty knob. I opened the door and crossed the threshold, into the
abyss that had become my life.

I stood in the foyer and kicked off my shoes. The linoleum
was cool beneath my feet, and the loneliness seeped in almost instantly, as if it had
been there waiting. It was familiar, this sense of emptiness.

“Comfort in the evil you know,” I once read on the jacket of a book about bad
marriages. I had come to a formidable crossroads, left with the choice of
saving my marriage, or killing my husband, but advancements in forensics had
made it impossible to kill anyone and get away with it, so I got myself a
library card, and checked out every book ever written on how to mend
what seemed unmendable. I returned them all, three weeks later. Unread.

“I'm home,” I called to a silent house. “Tom? You here?”

“I'm in the kitchen, Mona,” came the response from the roommate who was
my husband.
“What are you doing?” I asked, finding Tom Siggs at the kitchen table, his nose
in a crossword puzzle.

“Same old, same old. How was work?” he asked, as our eyes met, as a
recognition almost occurred between two idiots in a relationship dying of boredom.

“It was like work,” I said.

“Work usually is,” Tom replied, his gaze back on the paper.

“Dinner?” I asked.

“Dinner?” Tom repeated.

“The meal you eat at night, Tom.”

“I know what dinner is, Mona.”

“Did you want some?”

“I'll light the grill.”

“Awesome,” I said, with no enthusiasm.

Tom left his paper in the waning sunlight, and I took his chair. It was still
warm, and I felt sadness and heat creep into my body, joining the loneliness
that had settled there. It was almost like being touched by him, but not, yet
it was the closest thing I'd had to a connection with my husband in as long as
I could remember.

I looked at the man who stood outside my back door. A man who was once
a stranger, then my friend, my lover, my husband, a stranger. A perfect circle,
one Dante would appreciate.

What happened?

It was a question without an answer, a complex equation with an elusive
solution, one that could be found over time, if either of us were willing to make
the investment. We weren't.

“I'm troubled about something, Mona.”"

Book Review: Healing in the Hurting Places

Author: Karen F. Riley
Title: Healing in the Hurting Places
Genre: Biography, Inspirational, and Self-help
Pages: 217 (ebook)
First Published: August 16th, 2011
Where I Got It: Given to me to read and review honestly by Charisma Media

" Healing in the Hurting Places is a personal experience story and outreach for victims of childhood sexual abuse, and those who want to help them. It sensitively focuses on the healing journey—how to recognize symptoms of abuse and offer help. Victims often feel alone, they don’t know where to turn or may believe no one will understand. Author Karen Riley speaks to that place of pain and takes you on the healing journey that transformed her life.

“This is not about the tragic event, but about where to go now. I want them to know that they are not alone, and there is One who can heal their broken hearts,” writes the author.

Others who will benefit from this story of hope and healing: those affected by alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic, and other physical or verbal abuse—and those who are involved with them.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Many victims share similar characteristics and traits as a result of abuse, which often manifest in the same behavior patterns—Healing in the Hurting Places is a springboard to empowerment and better understanding."

Like earlier stated I am reading this for the author and for CM for my honest review.

Wow....even though I never had to experience such horrid events, I can still find inspiration through this.  In an odd way it helped me. It gave me some advice for the future when I fall into a fight of depression again. Bad things happen. People die and nothing goes your way and there is nothing you can do to stop it. However, with the right help you can find the light and continue with life. Yes, it's confession time. I do tend to find myself falling into bouts of depression. Not bad enough for me to need pills or for people to really notice. I'm good at hiding it behind my cool demeanor and happy-go-lucky facade. Usually it is events that set it off. Like the month of August was horrible for me. I cried nearly everyday, because every day something was beyond my control. I was fired unjustly, my beloved cat died, my cousin died, I had to rely on my parents for financial support due to the government being assholes, my cousin left the country to South Korea, I had a huge fight with Sarah (nearly ended our friendship), and other small little events. However, the meaning of this rant was to show that everyone has issues. Not everyone is raped or molested or abused...but everyone needs inspiration from time to time. I feel like this book can help others.

I know many people who were sexually abused as children. One is an ex-friend of mine. I had been friends with her for 4 years before the group shattered and fell apart. She went one way and I went the other. I remember when she told me about the abuse and I was shocked! She was the first person who told me details and whatnot of what happened to her (yes, I knew people who went through this, but I didn't know any details). I wish this book had been around during this, because she was an avid reader and I know she would have loved this book. Going through this event is a constant struggle. You never, EVER truly "get over it".

Anyways, sorry for the constant rants up there. This book may be intended for those that need help and inspiration about dealing with the abuse, but I find that this book helps others who have different demons to fight. I really loved the letters part of the book, where people sent the authors letters. I felt it added a lot to the story.

All-in-all, this was a pretty good book. I'm glad we read it and Karen F. Riley was so open with the reader. Sharing her experience really does help others. Life is a struggle and we all have our demons and I find that everyone needs inspiration and help from time to time and Karen F. Riley does that with this book. I would recommend this to those who need a boost, for those who did experience such horrid events, and for those that need a change in their literature. Out of five stars I grant this one 5 stars.

Book Review: Deja Vu All Over Again

Author: James Strait
Title: Deja Vu All Over Again
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopia, a touch of Romance, Disaster, and Fantasy
Pages: ebook
First Published: February 10th, 2012
Where I Got It: Given to me to read and review for Charisma Media Network for my honest opinion

"It had long been debated that the end of days for planet earth was set in concrete as December 21, 2012. Mathematical savant Ana Christensen was merely following her instincts when working a theorem in a direction and style that could have never been accepted by traditional mathematicians. As a result she stumbled upon an ancient Mayan creation, a time loop beginning in 3114BC and ending on the long contested twenty first century date. In a dynamic race against time, Ana and her male compatriot battle the forces of individual evil, bureaucracy, paramilitary mercenaries, and most powerful of all...destiny"

Like earlier stated, I read this for CMN and the author for my honest opinion.

Okay. These type of books/movies are not my normal cup of tea. I'm not big on the dystopia or disaster genre. My mom would be drooling all over this and she will be once I allow her to use my Kindle. However, I was asked by the my fellow STARS at CMN if I could pick this up and give it a shot. You only live once (unless you believe in reincarnation), so why not. However, I will note that this review will be a little on the short side.

It wasn't too bad by comparison of other books/movies about the ending of the world or the possibility of the world ending. I loved the fact that James Strait played with the notion that with the ending of the Mayan calendar there will be a loop of time. This plays a little on my own belief. It doesn't say anywhere ANYWHERE that the world will end because the calendar ends. The Mayans just ran out of room and they say it starts all over again. That is it. No the world will not burst into flames or whatever. I found rather amusing that James Strait took the "all over again" literally. Its rather entertaining.

Honestly, my brain had a hard time grasping what was going on some of the time. Science isn't my cup of tea either, so this was a brain teaser for me. Perhaps it didn't help that I had a hard time paying attention. I found myself getting distracted and whatnot. Or perhaps I got distracted easily because I was confused. I'm not sure what is the catalyst in this solution (ha, I did learn something from AP Chemistry!).

I must give major kuddos to James Strait for having Ana be the big ol' hero! Normally in books and movies like this the main person/hero is a guy named Jack (or whatever). I also loved the little sprinkle of romance he added to keep the story light from time to time. ^.^

All-in-all I may have been confused, distracted, and slight bored at times, but I did kind of like it! It wasn't my cup of tea, but I know for sure my mom will be IN LOVE WITH THIS! If you are like my mom then this is the book for you! Don't let my 'eh it's okay' feeling persuade you away, give it a try! Out of five stars I grant this 3 stars.

Favorite Character(s): Ana?

Not-so Favorite Character(s): didn't really have any.
