This was surreal on crack, and I do like weird lit.

Samantha has writer´s block. She is a student and her group is scary. They all just all call each other bunny and hug. Then they invite her, she does hesitate but she goes and shit happens, like what is going on? I can´t tell you either because that means spoilers, but someone mentioned Alice in Wonderland and it fits. It gets surreal, there is weirdness and when you think you know, you do not.

Weird lit is fun. You never know where it is headed. I guess this is under horror, but it is never like SCARY, just wtf am I on?

I liked it a lot.

Review:

Randomly came upon this little guy, so I decided to give it a chance! It sounded pretty good, and I do love witches. ;) Plus, look at that kitty!!!!!!!!!!

Here we have Esme and William. Esme is the local healer and witch. William comes in, and he needs to be healed. However, there is something between them that resonates. When she heals him, she helps unlock powers he never knew he had. There is an attraction, but there is an evil coming to Windsor, and she has to help train him for the upcoming battle. 

This was a nice read. I enjoyed our journey and our little lovebirds. They were very sweet, and the drama was to a minimum. Some internal stuff and the looming battle, of course. 

I liked both our characters, and there was a nice collection of side characters. I am curious about Minerva. I think her book is next. 

Some elements of the plot seemed....weak. Not sure if that is the right word. I don't feel like I understand the world or these powers. Maybe things will be better explained in the next book? Everything felt flowy and loosey goosey...a bit too flowy and loosey goosey for my liking.

Even with that, I still enjoyed the journey and our romance. With the ending....I am curious to see what is next, but I'm not rushing to read it. Maybe if it is free or on Kindle Unlimited. Maybe there is an audio I would enjoy a touch more. 

I'll give this 3 stars.

The person I borrowed it from dnfed it, people on my friend list had dnfed it, and it was meh, but I wanted to see if the romance would pay out. BOOM! I got hit in the face, wtf happened? The romance part suddenly imploded. Was this not a cozy paranormal romance? Eh..ok?

Nope, now we are all about the curse because this is a family of witches. And oh no, grandma is dying and we are all doomed!

Boom! Bloody hell, that effing romance is back. I hate this romance. It sucked! What the heck was that?!

I honestly do not know what this book was meant to be. Paranormal cozy? Nope changed. Romance? Nope, changed. It was messy and it made me mad at the end.

Yes yes I should have given up, but I wanted to know.

Review:

I was given this as a gift, and I was excited! You know I love a good nonfiction once in a while. Helps freshen the palate. 

In this little guy, we go over the histories of some authors who have ties to Michigan. Some born here, some raised here, and some worked here. Some...all three. 

Such a diversity of authors! It was a nice variety.

I learned a lot! There were some familiar names I had zero idea were connected to my home state. There were some names I never even heard of! 

It was a quick read, and it was refreshing for sure. 

The author(s) did a good job not weighing the reader down with dates and too much information. We got enough to get a gist of the author they were talking about. 

But yes. This was a nice and quick read. 

I'll give this 4 stars.

Review:

Randomly saw this on BookBub, so why not! Love, I had zero idea that this would be a vampire tale!

Here we have Mina, who loves working at The Magpie. It allows her to escape her lonely existence after tragedy. However, she's been seeing shapes in the tea that scare her. After one omen, she stumbles upon a body. Everyone starts expecting Harker even though he never ventures beyond the bounds of his estate. The day after the murder, Harker shows up at the Magpie and will change their lives forever. 

I was shocked that we had vampires here LOL. The summary never really went over this. Did I miss something in the summary? I'm not mad, but I was shocked. 

This started off slow, and I never really and truly settled into the story. What is wrong with me? This has everything. Historical, vamps, tea, a mystery! I just couldn't connect.

The story was interesting enough that I kept reading. There were little sparks that kept me intrigued enough to keep pushing, but I just felt meh at the end. Didn't hate it or love it. Just meh.

Mina was okay, and Harker was eh. 

Again....am I the problem? Two books in a row I just couldn't connect with. I need a refresh, I think. 

In the end, that was just alright. I felt meh by the end, but I didn't hate it. It kept my interest enough to finish the book. I'll stamp this with 2. 

Book Review: The Petticoat Letters by Kelly Lyman

Review:

This seemed like the perfect read for America's 250! It's been a hot min since I read an HR or HF set during the American Revolution. 

Here we have Nora, who pretty much lost it all at the start of the war. Her family home was burned to the ground, and only she and her brother survived. However, the war took her brother away too when he decided to fight with the Rebels. Nora is unwed and living with her loyalist family. She soon finds herself at the mercy of the Rebels and Alex. While in his company, she starts to see what the Rebels see...and maybe there is something between her and Alex. 

This had an extremely slow start. It took me a couple of tries to push through. I was tempted to toss in the white flag of defeat and move on. After my second attempt, I was hooked. There was a scene that made me want more. No spoilers from me!!

But yes, this gets intense in a few spots. War is hell and all. So some triggers for sure. 

Can I be honest? I didn't like Alex or Nora by the end. I started out liking Nora, and then I lost respect for her. Alex? I was always meh, but he annoyed me after a scene. I still kept reading because I was more curious about the war and etc. That was fun! A part of me wishes this wasn't a romance. SHOCKED faces I see, but yes....not all things should be romances. Yes, there can be some love, but this would've fared better as just historical fiction, methinks. 

Don't get me started on the big baddie. He was literally a caricature of a British redcoat baddie. Mmmmmm, but he was scary so I will give him that. 

All-in-all, I was entertained. I liked the spying and war and etc. The romance was meh because I didn't care for our mains. And the baddie was scary, but he was your A-typical redcoat baddie. I'll give this 3 stars. It would be a 2, but I think some of the scenes deserve a little more love, and maybe I'm being overly kind.

Review:

Finally got a chance to get into this. However, I'm bummed that my library didn't have the audio version of this one. SIGHS. Ebook is fine and all, and I'll take what I can get. 

We are back with Carl and Donut. The top 10 list is populated. The sponsorship is open. And the difficulty is ramping up. They will face an impossibly complicated subway system, all knotted up and filled with monsters. Even with these odds, there is a spark of hope......crawlers are working together to solve the puzzles and find good loot. 

Oh Carl. Oh Donut. This was a mess but fun and chaotic. 

There were some tedious moments, but it didn't bug me too much. I powered through them because I needed to know what was going to happen next.

I don't want to spoil anything, but yes, lots of trains and lots of monster mobs. Lots of crawlers. I loved seeing them start to work together. Honestly.....they need to all work together. F these TV people. 

The ending has me screaming. I can't wait to get started on book 4!

As you seen above, I did the book version of this book. I enjoyed it, but I missed Donut screaming in my ear. I may have to cave and buy the audio or use my Audible credits. Sighs. 

Overall, this was chaotic and messy and fun. Some tedious moments, but worth pushing through. Def read the other books first. 4 stars from me.

 I kept seeing reviews how I would hate Natalie, and sure I did not like her. She was horrible. But at the end I just felt sorry for her.

She was clearly depressed already in College, after the first kid even more. She should have gotten help then. Instead she seems to turn more manic, people throw money at her. And she has enablers. No one ever seems to point the finger at the ever more rightwing conspiracy freak of a husband. I just cant hate someone who seems really mentally unstable, and I do not think she ever got help. She is just evil, nah, the woman needs some psychiatric help.

I feel like I read another book then everyone else. Why did no one ever help her?! I get it is hard to help someone who does not know they need help but come on.

Natalie marries young, moves to a farm, starts to film her life. Think Ballerina farm. Smile and pretend everyone is happy, even though everyone is miserable. She only cares about likes. She is focused and driven and pretends to be the best Trad Wife there is.

And then she is transported to the 1800s. And being a real trad wife sucks....

I liked it, it was good. I enjoyed the twists, but, srsly, why did no one ever help her?

Review:

I picked this up because 1) freeeeeeee and 2) it fit a reading challenge. It all seemed like the perfect storm. 

Here we have Kingston and Tatum. The two have known each other for years. After the death of her father, she thinks she'll finally get the quiet life of her dreams at the family cottage, and she'll be out of the family business for good. However, her father and Kingston have other plans for her. To get her cottage and be left alone, she has to marry Kingston for one year and, hopefully, give him a baby. Problem? She hates him.

Sighs. 

Sighs again but louder and more eye rolling. 

I hate Kingston. I hate his face. Tatum RUUUUUUUN!!!!

I'm a smut gal, and this had too much smut. It was like every other page. Did they ever really talk? Barely. That is why it took 600+ pages for them to finally get on the same page; they were able to finally talk here and there in between the rolling around on the sheets. UGH.

I powered through because I wanted the credit for the reading challenge, and I had the smallest bit of hope maybe, just maybe, Kingston would grow on me. He finally did...kinda....in the epilogue *faints*

But yes. Not for me. This has a high rating, so people must love it. I guess I'm in the minority on this one. 

2 stars. I give this an extra star because I liked Tatum and her cat. Good kitty! Scratch him again!!!!!

I did feel like I was thrown into the middle of a story. Nomad is on the run and jumps from planet to planet to escape some bad guys. And this planet sucks. You have to be on the move constantly escaping the sun. It is so powerful that it melts everything in its path. Luckily the planet is small but yes run run run around the planet.

And a crazy guy wants to rule everyone. He also leaves people to burn to death and then collect their souls to power the machines that take them across the world.

Nomad must save the planet....

Interesting world. Scary world. I enjoyed the story, but at the same time. Maybe I am like beginning to tire, everything is good, but not fantastic anymore

Years ago he had comrades in arms and a cause to believe in, but now the man who calls himself Nomad knows only a life on the run. Forced to hop from world to world in the Cosmere whenever the relentless Night Brigade gets too close, Nomad lands on a new planet and is instantly caught up in the struggle between a tyrant and the rebels who want only to escape being turned into mindless slaves-all under the constant threat of a sunrise whose heat will melt the very stones. Book Review: The Deal by Elle Kennedy

Review:

This FINALLY arrived from the library! I think with this becoming a show, it has become very popular again. 

Here we have Hannah and Garrett. The two couldn't be more different. He's a hockey player and doesn't date. He only cares about hockey... school is secondary. Hannah is in the music program and has a lot of baggage from her past that she thought she left behind. Garrett needs help passing a test to stay on the college hockey team. Hannah helps if he can help her bag the cute boy. 

The beginning was a little rough for me. It took me a few chapters to get sucked in, but once I was sucked in, I couldn't stop reading. I adored our two mains here...esp Hannah. Awww.

I loved watching them go from strangers to study-partners to friends to lovers to more. It was lovely, and the transition worked for them. They needed the time to find love. 

There is some drama, especially with what happened to Hannah in High School and with Garrett's asshole dad. However, it felt naturally dealt with. It wasn't a soap opera or swept away quickly; I appreciated how the author dealt with these issues. They are serious but didn't derail the story. 

There are some cringe dialogue, but not as much as the spin-off. This felt more natural. I wonder if she was trying too hard in the other one? 

But yes, I really liked this one. I am tempted to keep going. I might even watch the show! ;)

Review:

I was given this during a book exchange for Xmas. :D 

Here we follow Beth, who needs a job. She's been struggling to find her next nannying or babysitting gig. One day, the boys upstairs receive a little present on their doorstep with a note saying, "You have a kid." Whose baby? Who knows, but they need help. They hire Beth to help them as they figure things out. There is Jack, who is sweet and nerdy. Cyrus, who is flirty and smooth. Seb... who is a bit reserved and an atypical cold businessman. 

I wasn't expecting a SERIOUS story here. Yes, smut with some drama. Always nice. However, there was a depth here that I didn't expect, and it was nice. We got to deep dive into all four of our characters. They all have family issues. I loved deep diving into this and them all helping each other out. 

Yes, the smut was lovely. But I really did love watching them go from neighbors, to friends, to lovers, to a foursome couple. It was beautiful. 

Cami is adorable, and I would burn the world for her. She will grow up spoiled, and she deserves it!!!!

But yes. This book had all the feels. Happiness, humor, sadness, joy, anger, and well... spiciness of course. 

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I really liked this book.

I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?

He knows where to find me.

Review:

I had a couple of people recommend this book, and it was available at the library (after waiting in line for a couple of weeks). Why not? Love hockey romances! This is technically a spin-off (methinks) from a different series. I still need to read that series. One day!!!!!!

Here we follow Fitz and Summer. The two couldn't be more different. Summer loves fashion and tries to look at the positives in life. She messed up big, but she has been given a second chance! Fitz is a grumpy and gruff hockey player. There is a spark between them, but she overheard him calling her superficial and just "fluff". She won't chase a man, so she'll just have to ignore him even though he is one of her roommates. 

This started off......meh. I struggled the first 50 pages-ish. I don't want to say it but I can't think of a better word(s)...it was so awkward and cringey. Some of the dialogue made me roll my eyes and made me appreciate not being in my early 20s. However, things leveled out and did get better. I think the author stopped trying so hard to sound like a college kid.

I didn't like Fitz or Summer at first either, but I warmed up to them once we got past the surface-level. Still found them mid by the end. Eh. I think they are side characters in the original series, so maybe I would've liked them more there? Mmmmm. I finally got the first book from the original series from the library, so we shall see. 

I also didn't buy Summer's insta-friendship with Bee. I warmed up too that as we went along. But it still felt so sudden.

But yeah. This was entertaining enough, and it did keep me up one night, so that's a plus? It all felt......shallow? Don't get me wrong, I like a carefree romance, but the author tried to make this deep, but it just didn't strike. Maybe I am getting too old for college romances. 

Overall, 3 stars from me. It was entertaining enough, and I ended up warming up to our mains.

So this is listed as a horror. Someone called it pink horror. But yeah there is no horror, it is more a supernatural story.

Annie decides to make a new life as her boyfriend leaves her. This takes her to a teaching job in a small town. There she meets a Fabolous woman! Everyone loves this woman....or do they?

Her and Sophie becomes great friends. Sophie in her big empty house. Spiders. Strange things happening.

But this was about Sophie finding herself and being happy what she finds.

I liked it. It was another easy fun read

All her life, Annie has played it nice and safe. After being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Annie seeks a fresh start. She accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate. She’s stunned by how perfect and picturesque the town is. The people are all friendly and warm. Her new apartment is dreamy too, minus the oddly persistent spider infestation.  

Then Annie meets Sophie. Beautiful, charming, magnetic Sophie, who takes a special interest in Annie, who wants to be her friend. More importantly, she wants Annie to stop apologizing and start living for herself. That’s how Sophie lives. Annie can’t help but gravitate toward the self-possessed Sophie, wanting to spend more and more time with her, despite the fact that the rest of the townsfolk seem…a little afraid of her. And like, okay. There are some things. Sophie’s appearance is uncanny and ageless, her mansion in the middle of the woods feels a little unearthly, and she does seem to wield a certain power…but she couldn’t be…could she?

Review:

I've really been feeling these quick PNRs of this series! Not sure why, but it's been all I want to read. 

Here we have Emmett and Ria. There is a violent gang causing trouble and thinking they can take on the DarkRiver. Things go from bad to worse when they target Ria. Emmett will never let anything happen to his human. His? Uh-oh. 

Emmett was fun, and I liked Ria a lot. I think I really adore human/changeling a bit more. We got a nice break from the Psy issues. 

Dumb gang. SMH. 

This was quick and just what the doctor ordered. 

This was short but perfect. Mystery, action, passion, and even some humor! It hit all the marks and quickly. 

I'll give this 5 stars.

This book had calm pace, and sure not a lot happened, but it was good and sometimes you will just drift along.

It is about Yeongju who is burned out and opens a bookstore. At first it goes, not so well, but little by little she finds herself and the bookstore starts to to become a place people wants to visit.

She meets new people who becomes friends. The man who cant find a job and becomes a barista. A student unsure about his path in life, a office guy turned writer, a woman who turns about and just stares for hours. They all have their reason and they all fall in love with the bookshop.

Have I heard about Korean work ethics? Sure, but damn, no wonder people are burned out. And there is a lot of talk about that here. People who work until midnight, go home and start again. People who have non permanent positions but are not given real ones because they are easy to fire. And then those who downtrade, they have a better job but then do a lesser one. But are happier, still society values those better jobs more.

Will this bookshop thrive? Who knows, but Yeongju and the people she has met will do their best.

I enjoyed it, but yes it is a slower one and about people. You just have to go with the flow.

Yeongju is burned out. With her high-­flying career, demanding marriage, and busy life in Seoul, she knows she should feel successful, but all she feels is drained. Yet an abandoned dream nags at her, and in a leap of faith, she leaves her old life behind. After quitting her job and divorcing her husband, Yeongju moves to a small residential neighborhood outside the city, where she opens the Hyunam-dong Bookshop.

Review:

Yayyy. I love this series. This wasn't at my library, so I had to buy it. Not complaining! I couldn't wait for my library to get it. Too impatient ya know? Long-term plan is to buy the whole series anyway.

Greyfriars Bobby has vanished. The little terrier is famous. Davina, someone from Mallory's body's past has been making a profit from guided tours. When the dog vanishes, Davina calls on Mallory to help find him. Mallory and Grey agree to take on the case... for information about Catriona's life story. 

Why did this take me so long to finish? I kept getting distracted by my other reads. And then I would have to start this all over because I would forget what was happening. Whoopsies. 

This was still nice overall, but I felt like....I didn't really care about learning about Catriona. Yes, sad story when we learn, but she was a bad guy at the end of it all still. She did bad things to people, so I guess I don't care. I'm glad Mallory took over her body to do some good. 

I did like our mystery. Bobby!!!!

But yes, this wasn't my favorite, but I still liked it overall.

Review:

I love going back and catching some of these shorts and novellas from this series. It's fun! The only way to read this was by borrowing the anthology. It works. 

Here we follow Tazia and Stefan. Tazia is an engineer and likes to keep things running smoothly. Stefan is Psy and has a strong barrier of silence to protect him and everyone around him. Being telekinetic can be powerful, but dangerous. After a disaster strikes, the two work together to save as many people as they can. 

This was lovely. I loved watching these two find common ground. And then friendship. And then more. Not a lot of crazy drama. Some external and some internal, but it was manageable and worked for a short story. 

Loved the depth. Loved the couple. *chef kiss*

Yet another one from the anthology that I wanted to read!

Here we see Dorian in the early parts of his life. He was a changeling who could never shift until he finally learns how to let his leopard come out and play. 

Awwwww I loved seeing a young Dorian. I wish this was a touch longer. Maybe a scene or two more!! Dorian is a lovely character. Now I want to read his book again. It has been so long. 

But yes. Another short one that gives you a taste of the world and the author. It's such a good series overall.

Review:

I love to read a couple of nonfiction books a year. I like learning, and it helps my brain reset in some strange way. 

Here, we have a collection of biographies about "scandalous" women throughout history. We get little snips about the lives of these women. 

The author had a decent selection of women. They all made a splash somehow, and it was interesting seeing them hold their own in a male-dominated world. From spies to seductresses to divorcees to geniuses. It was nice. 

The tone made it interesting. It wasn't some stuffy and boring historical textbook. There was flair, and I appreciated it!! It made it fun. 

I would've liked a little more depth. I like the fluffy and light, don't get me wrong, but I would've liked maybe an analysis or something at the end of each section, or something. 

Also, I think I would've liked to see more women from different countries. We had the atypical US, UK, France, etc. And the time period was roughly the same for these women. Yes, we did get Cleopatra and a few medieval, but it seemed the majority seemed to be women between 1820 to 1920. Sure, some sprinkles, but I would've liked other stories too from women in other countries and time period that are looked over in our history. 

Other than that, I did like it. It was quick and informational. It was nice reading about women who didn't live their lives by the status quo of the time. I'll give this 3 stars.
