Review:

I was given this book as a gift, but I have been curious about it. There was a lot of interest when this first came out a few years ago. 

Here, we follow Edie as she tries to make sense of her life. She starts up an affair with a man whose wife is okay with an open marriage...but with strict rules. Edie soon finds herself unemployed and falling face-first into her lover's family life and home. 

I feel like people love or are meh about this book. I don't know where I fully sit on this book. 

There were some things I liked and some things I didn't. 

My biggest issue was the writing style. It felt so...choppy. It didn't flow right and kept taking me out of the story. It felt so jarring! I did like the observations and the inner monologue parts, but the story itself felt so choppy and disjointed. 

I also can't buy this as a romance. It felt so awkward, and I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop at any minute. This really should just be a...not chick lit but something else. I'm blanking on a good genre to shove this in. 

Honestly, I liked reading about Edie and Rebecca the most. I enjoyed seeing that relationship form and morph. I also adored little Akila! 

And the ending....left me feeling nothing. It just ended. 

But yes...some good, but a lot of bad. I'll give this 3 stars. Maybe the audio would've been a hair better!

Audiobook Review: Vacation Wars by Meghan Quinn

Review:

I picked this up because 1) this sounded really good, 2) it's a fun local, and 3) it fits one of my challenges!

Here we follow Tessa and Myles. The two have been dancing around each other for decades. They never really spoke, but they both had this crush on each other. One day, they finally interact and realize that maybe they are meant to be with each other. However, distance and their families might keep them apart. 

This was very sweet. I enjoyed watching Tessa and Myles find each other. The side plots did muddy things, though. I think we spent too much time dealing with their friends and family. I would've loved seeing them together more. Maybe a few more sneak-away dates.

The ending was great and perfect. I loved seeing everyone growing the F up. Tessa and her friends were sooooo childish, but I'm glad they all realized it (slight spoiler). Even Myles and his father were acting like babies. Yes, yes, we needed them to be babies to have the drama, but sometimes it was so annoying. But YES. Everyone finally got over themselves and grew up. It was a great ending. 

Honestly, I would like a sequel. I feel like Myles' friend deserves his own story. Maybe a short story?

The narrators did a great job. Perfect voices for everyone. 

Overall, I did really like this. Some issues, but it was resolved by the end, so I was happy. I would've liked a little more time focused on our mains, but I loved them as a couple.

Weeeee Amazon first read! A friend and I both picked this to check out. How could you not? That title....that cover....that summary???? So enticing!

In this story, we follow Nora. Nora has always gotten a thrill from stealing. Ben, her future husband, never bats an eye when Nora shows up with things that are way out of their price range. After doing a job for a reclusive neighbor, he passes along a rumor of an extraordinary object in the neighbor's house. It's a priceless scarf, and Nora wants it. It's a scarf that is woven from the silk of black widow spiders. However, there is a legend attached to it....there were twelve weavers, but only eleven survived. After breaking into the neighbor's house to steal the scarf, Nora will come face-to-face with the unexplainable. 

Oh Nora....you have a problem. And if Ben doesn't know...he's dumb. All the signs are there. I guess love is blind? SMH. 

It's hard to feel for our main here, but I still enjoyed the story. There is a lesson mixed in with the story. Maybe multiple lessons, to be fair. 

This would be a lovely short to read during Halloween. Maybe I'll read it again in a couple of years! It has some spooky elements for sure. 

The ending was good. A nice twist. 

Overall, this was a quick read but a nice read. It was just enough. The characters are hard to feel bad for, but not all stories have characters that are likeable!

Another random guy. I was digging around Audible, and I found this one. 

This short story catches a moment in time with a Chicago shop owner who catches yet another kid breaking into her bakeshop. There is a rumor going around that she is keeping a lot of cash in a sugar jar. 

This was super, duper short, but there was so much going on. 

I wanted more. I wanted to see what she does next. I think there is more story to tell. 

The narrator was lovely. 

But yes, it was a short capture of a moment where a woman has to make a choice.

Review:

I'm loving this series. This quickly became available at my library even though I was slated for weeks. I was shocked when this popped up. Yayyyy.

Here we follow Allie and Dean. Graduation is around the corner, and Allie is in crisis mode. She doesn't know what she really wants to do, and now she is nursing a broken heart after she broke up with her boyfriend. It was for the best, but it still hurts. Having wild rebound sex wasn't on the agenda, but Dean is impossible to resist. Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, goals, and so on. One night with Allie was not nearly enough for him. 

Wheeeellllpppppppppppp. This was my favorite of the series so far. 

I loved it. 

Dean is swoon-worthy even though he was a little man-whore. 

Allie was darling. 

I loved seeing our friends so much. It was nice! Awwwwwwwwww. 

Sean is an ass. 

Things get sad. And then happy. 

I had zero issues. I loved this book. I can't wait for their season on the show. We got a taste of it but I want more.

Review:

Randomly found this while looking for a football romance. Lo and behold, this is also a second chance. Win-win? Eh?

Here we follow Melody and Zac. There was always chemistry and something between these two, but after a heartbreaking and embarrassing night, they both have tried to move on. Ten years later, Melody is back in town after her big-city boyfriend broke up with her so he could be single on the guys' trip. Now she's crashing at her brother's and trying to pick up her life while avoiding Zac. Zac hasn't gotten over Melody, and now his is a chance to win the girl. 

I GUESS this is a second chance. They never became an official couple, but the love WAS there, and it ended badly. Idiot kids.

The reason, when fully revealed, ruined the story for me. I was enjoying this the whole time until the big "reveal". Really? And why wouldn't her brother or their friends tell her? No wonder why she fell into the arms of a monster....sighs. 

Besides that "reveal," I enjoyed the forced proximity. I don't blame her for keeping arms' length. He really had to work it. 

The narrators were great. Loved their voices. I may or may not be biased because I adore Teddy Hamilton.....eee.

But yes. I did enjoy this. I hated the reveal of why Zac vanished that night. Not a deal breaker, but I wanted to scream and shout and let it all out.

Movie Review: Young Washington (2026)

REVIEW:

Oh, Georgie Wash. I was so excited to see this!!!! I had to go see it in theaters. My fellow history nerd friend and I went to see it. And yes, I dragged poor Hubby along. 

We all know the history of George Washington. But how many know his early days? It was not an easy road for him. 

The cast was lovely. I LOVED who they had to play young George. I hope, in a few years, he can play an older George. He really filled those shoes well.

One thing of note I kept whispering to myself was the camera angles, especially in the battle scenes. They felt different but good. There is so much going on, and you feel in the middle of it. I think the camera team did great. 

Some of the dialogue felt a little cliché, but it didn't ruin the story or characters. I loved the foreshadow drops. Made me chuckle.

There was a "special message" at the end...skip it. It didn't add anything extra to the story or whatever. 

I would for sure watch this again. The battle, the story. It was entertaining and a reminder that everyone starts somewhere. A leader is not born. A leader is made. 

4 stars from me.

Review:

Been itching to get to book 2. Originally I was waiting for it to arrive from the library, but I couldn't wait, so I used an Audible credit to get a copy asap. The wait at the library was willllllllllllllld.

We are back at Briar. This time we are with Logan, who is trying to get over his crush anyway he can. Enter in Grace. There is more than a spark between them, and Logan messes up by saying something dumb. He realizes Grace is everything he has ever wanted, so he has to get her back. 

Oh sweet, sweet Logan. You are so sweet but yet so dumb. Bless his lil heart. I'm so glad Grace made him work really hard to get her back, because she deserves the best of the best. Logan IS the best for her, but that work was good for him lolll. 

Ugh Logan's backstory kills me. I feel so bad for him and his brother. :/

That ending scene before the epilogue! Oh, my heart!

I ended up doing the audio this time around. Our male voice was great. The female voice? Ehhhhhhh not so much. I did warm up to it, but it took a while

Overall, I really, really enjoyed this one. I liked Grace, and I liked Logan. It was very sweet watching them go from just hooking up to more. I liked watching them grow and learn. I can't WAIT for Dean's story!!!!! 4 stars from me.

Review:

Randomly found this little one, so why not? I needed something short and something thriller-y. 

Here, we follow Marti, who has just moved into a new home after a bitter divorce from her husband, Emery. She wants to be done with him, but he took some of her most cherished possessions. Days after she moved in, Marti is attacked and left shaken and beaten. She never saw the face of her attacker, and her ex has a strong alibi. There is little to go on, and the detectives have pretty much given up. Marti will do whatever it takes to find her assailant so she can finally have peace. 

This was a quick listen, and I was thankful. I needed something quick. 

Poor Marti.. I just want her to be happy and safe. 

Her ex is an ass. 

The one neighbor is a creep. 

Her one friend pissed me off. 

The mystery/thriller was intense but slightly predictable. HOWEVER, the resolution was great. It was good. I literally smiled. *clap*

Narration was good. She did a fine job overall. A lot of the women's voices sounded a bit familiar, so you have to pay attention.

All-in-all, this was good and intense. I'll stamp this with 3 stars.

Audiobook Review: Seatmate by Cara Bastone

Review:

Yayy book 3.

Here we follow Gwen and Sam. They are just two strangers who sit next to each other on a long bus ride. Instead of sitting in silence, they end up chatting and enjoying themselves. Playing road-trip games, avoiding calls from Sam's mom, and clockwatching. Everything is going great until the bus breaks down. They both have to get to town asap, so they work together to get there. Could these seatmates be soul mates?

This is slightly tied into the other books. They mention a character from book 1, but otherwise this would do okay as a standalone. I'm a sucker for this series, so I highly encourage reading the other two books first. 

I do wish that we had more of a connection with the other characters. Maybe see them in the epilogue? 

This was adorable, and I liked it. I loved their conversations and their journey. Our mains are so sweet and so perfect for each other. The chemistry was there from the moment they said hi. I wish we had more....heat. Like a splash more. Maybe an accidental kiss or something. But it's supposed to be clean, so I get it.

Loved the full cast of narrators here. They were all perfect, and I'm a sucker for Amanda Ronconi!!! She is just so good. 

Overall, I enjoyed this, and I loved the series. I hope we get another book. Maybe this couple will pop up in the next one. But yes, 100% recommend all three books. 4 stars.

Review:

I picked this up because 1) freeeeeeee and 2) it fit a reading challenge. It all seemed like the perfect storm. 

Here we have Kingston and Tatum. The two have known each other for years. After the death of her father, she thinks she'll finally get the quiet life of her dreams at the family cottage, and she'll be out of the family business for good. However, her father and Kingston have other plans for her. To get her cottage and be left alone, she has to marry Kingston for one year and, hopefully, give him a baby. Problem? She hates him.

Sighs. 

Sighs again but louder and more eye rolling. 

I hate Kingston. I hate his face. Tatum RUUUUUUUN!!!!

I'm a smut gal, and this had too much smut. It was like every other page. Did they ever really talk? Barely. That is why it took 600+ pages for them to finally get on the same page; they were able to finally talk here and there in between the rolling around on the sheets. UGH.

I powered through because I wanted the credit for the reading challenge, and I had the smallest bit of hope maybe, just maybe, Kingston would grow on me. He finally did...kinda....in the epilogue *faints*

But yes. Not for me. This has a high rating, so people must love it. I guess I'm in the minority on this one. 

2 stars. I give this an extra star because I liked Tatum and her cat. Good kitty! Scratch him again!!!!!

Review:

This FINALLY arrived from the library! I think with this becoming a show, it has become very popular again. 

Here we have Hannah and Garrett. The two couldn't be more different. He's a hockey player and doesn't date. He only cares about hockey... school is secondary. Hannah is in the music program and has a lot of baggage from her past that she thought she left behind. Garrett needs help passing a test to stay on the college hockey team. Hannah helps if he can help her bag the cute boy. 

The beginning was a little rough for me. It took me a few chapters to get sucked in, but once I was sucked in, I couldn't stop reading. I adored our two mains here...esp Hannah. Awww.

I loved watching them go from strangers to study-partners to friends to lovers to more. It was lovely, and the transition worked for them. They needed the time to find love. 

There is some drama, especially with what happened to Hannah in High School and with Garrett's asshole dad. However, it felt naturally dealt with. It wasn't a soap opera or swept away quickly; I appreciated how the author dealt with these issues. They are serious but didn't derail the story. 

There are some cringe dialogue, but not as much as the spin-off. This felt more natural. I wonder if she was trying too hard in the other one? 

But yes, I really liked this one. I am tempted to keep going. I might even watch the show! ;)

Reading this again! A couple of people I know read it, and it was calling me, so I downloaded it. 

Holly is dealing with big life stuff. John is getting over a bad breakup. John accidently put a card on her car meant for someone else. He is the worst wingman ever. Whoopsies. An amusing mistake soon turns into a lovely exchange of anonymous notes, little acts of kindness, and a growing affection between two strangers. 

Awwwwwwwwww this was so sweet. I loved Holly and John. 

I loved the gifts. The notes. The dog.

The sad moments were sad but beautiful at the same time. 

There is some humor, but it felt real. 

AND THAT SECRET? How did I forget???

Great narrators. 

Great short. Now I kinda wanna read the rest of the series..............

Review:

I had a couple of people recommend this book, and it was available at the library (after waiting in line for a couple of weeks). Why not? Love hockey romances! This is technically a spin-off (methinks) from a different series. I still need to read that series. One day!!!!!!

Here we follow Fitz and Summer. The two couldn't be more different. Summer loves fashion and tries to look at the positives in life. She messed up big, but she has been given a second chance! Fitz is a grumpy and gruff hockey player. There is a spark between them, but she overheard him calling her superficial and just "fluff". She won't chase a man, so she'll just have to ignore him even though he is one of her roommates. 

This started off......meh. I struggled the first 50 pages-ish. I don't want to say it but I can't think of a better word(s)...it was so awkward and cringey. Some of the dialogue made me roll my eyes and made me appreciate not being in my early 20s. However, things leveled out and did get better. I think the author stopped trying so hard to sound like a college kid.

I didn't like Fitz or Summer at first either, but I warmed up to them once we got past the surface-level. Still found them mid by the end. Eh. I think they are side characters in the original series, so maybe I would've liked them more there? Mmmmm. I finally got the first book from the original series from the library, so we shall see. 

I also didn't buy Summer's insta-friendship with Bee. I warmed up too that as we went along. But it still felt so sudden.

But yeah. This was entertaining enough, and it did keep me up one night, so that's a plus? It all felt......shallow? Don't get me wrong, I like a carefree romance, but the author tried to make this deep, but it just didn't strike. Maybe I am getting too old for college romances. 

Overall, 3 stars from me. It was entertaining enough, and I ended up warming up to our mains.
