Book Review: A Royal Kiss and Tell by Julia London

Author: Julia London
Title: A Royal Kiss & Tell
Series: A Royal Wedding #2
Genre: Historical Romance
Format: ebook
Pages: 384
Published: May 19, 2020
Where I got It: Borrowed from library

Summary:
Every prince has his secrets. And she’s determined to unravel his…

Every dashing young man in London’s ton is vying for Lady Caroline Hawke’s hand—except one. Handsome, delectable roué Prince Leopold of Alucia can’t quite remember who Caroline is, and the insult is not to be tolerated. So, Caroline does what any clever, resourceful lady of means would do to make sure a prince remembers her: sees that amusingly risqué morsels about Leo’s reputation are printed in a ladies’ gossip gazette…all the while secretly setting her cap for the rakish royal.

Someone has been painting Leo as a blackguard, but who? Socially, it could ruin him. More important, it jeopardizes his investigation into a contemptible scheme that reaches the highest levels of government in London. Now, Leo needs Lady Caroline’s help to regain access to society. But this charming prince is about to discover that enlisting the deceptively sweet and sexy Lady Caroline might just cost him his heart, his soul and both their reputations…

Review:
I read book 1 a while back, and I remember liking this. I was curious about 2, and it was now available at my library. So why not?

Here we follow Caroline and Leo. Leo has secrets, and Caroline is desperate to uncover them because he doesn't remember her. A Rake? Not remember her Lady of the Ton? Unacceptable. She finds out someone has been painting Leo as a blackguard, but who and why? Socially, it will ruin him, but it could jeopardize his investigations into a scheme that reaches the highest levels of the government. He needs Caroline and her connections.

This was rough for me to get into. I don't know why, really. I liked the added layer of intrigue and society scrutiny. The two were interesting enough. Caro was a little shallow and selfish, but she is sweet enough. Leo has a huge heart, but he's a bull in a China shop. They truly need each other.

The intrigue kept me hooked enough to want to finish it. I didn't really even care about their love. I mean...I cared a touch, but....eh.

But yes, I just don't think I connected with this story. I was interested enough to finish it, but the resolution of this one is good enough for me. I believe there are more in the series, but there are no side characters I care enough about to read more.

I'll give this 2 stars.

By: Lauren Blakely

Narrated by: Zachary Webber, Andi Arndt

Length: 2 hrs and 25 mins

Release date: 01-31-19

Publisher: Audible Originals

Contemporary romance

Short novella. I do like these. Things have to work fast.

Kristen tries online dating and meets this fun guy Cameron. They talk, the flirt, but when they meet for real something is wrong...

So I can´t tell you what, but Cameron is a good guy and someone really wants these two to find love with each other.

Fun, some intrigues. Some meddling people, and two people who live on different sides of the country. But this is romance and it all works out.

Cute and fun. Good narration

Kristen Leonard is done with setups. She’s not interested in your son or your nephew or your butcher or the guy who mows your lawn, thank you very much, grandma! After all, she’s a modern woman—she’ll take her chances on the algorithms of online dating to find her ideal man. Before long, she meets a man who might just be the one—he’s hilarious, quick-witted, and full of heart. And when she meets up with Cameron in real life, he certainly looks exactly like his profile picture…but something’s not quite right.

There’s really no telling what brought them together and all bets are off as to whether or not they can trust their hearts over their heads. After all, can you fall in love with someone you’re not sure you really even know?

Book Review: On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn

Author: Julia Quinn
Title: On the Way to the Wedding
Series: Bridgertons #8
Genre: Historical Romance
Format: paperback
Pages: 384
Published: June 27, 2006
Where I got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
A funny thing happened...

Unlike most men of his acquaintance, Gregory Bridgerton believes in true love. And he is convinced that when he finds the woman of his dreams, he will know in an instant that she is the one. And that is exactly what happened. Except...

She wasn't the one. In fact, the ravishing Miss Hermione Watson is in love with another. But her best friend, the ever-practical Lady Lucinda Abernathy, wants to save Hermione from a disastrous alliance, so she offers to help Gregory win her over. But in the process, Lucy falls in love. With Gregory! Except...

Lucy is engaged. And her uncle is not inclined to let her back out of the betrothal, even once Gregory comes to his senses and realizes that it is Lucy, with her sharp wit and sunny smile, who makes his heart sing. And now, on the way to the wedding, Gregory must risk everything to ensure that when it comes time to kiss the bride, he is the only man standing at the altar...

Review:
Been holding off on finishing this series! It takes so long between each season of the show that I've been slowly making my way through the series. I finally decided to finish the main books of the series and read Gregory's tale. I still need to read the short story about Violet.

Gregory is not your A-typical guy of the ton. He believes in love and wants to find love. He wants what all his other siblings have. He wants it badly. When he comes across Hermione, he fancies himself in love. She HAS to be the one? Right? ...Right? Enter in Hermione's best friend, Lucy, who likes Gregory. He seems like the best of suitors, so she decides to try to help him win the girl. Lucy is engaged, and there is no way out of it, so why not let her best friend find love?

So I loved that Gregory truly wanted to be happy and find his own person. He sees how happy everyone in his family is, and he is the last unmarried sibling. He wants it so bad that he finds himself in love with the wrong person. It isn't love...no spoiler. Lucy is his person. He is just a dumb-dumb to not see it. Same with Lucy, but I get why she is blinded to it. She's technically engaged anyway. Not by choice, but family duties and whatnot.

I struggled really bad for the first...mmm....45% of the book? Gregory's infatuation with Hermione grated on my nerves. Sure. That is the whole story. He eventually wakes up after an event and realizes he never loved her. He loved the idea of being in love. Why SOOOO long? Why not shave that off a bit? Maybe only being in love like....30% of the book? And then fighting to get the real girl. I would've liked to see more time with Gregory yearning for Lucy and making her feel wanted.

Other than that block. I loved the story. It was dramatic and crazy and just plain fun. Gregory has a huge heart, and he's a big dumbdumb. Silly.

Lucy was sweet.

I liked one character a lot (I won't spoil anything). I was really hoping he found an HEA. Maybe the show will flush his story our more *fingers crossed*

In the end, this was a lovely series. I can see myself re-reading this someday. I loved all the siblings, even though they frustrated me sometimes. I'm so glad Netflix is making these books into a show. I would love to see more books like this find the limelight. But yes, totally worth reading the whole series. I had a little issue with this one, but by the end, I ended up having fun. I'll give this 3 stars.

Audiobook Review: Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman

Author: Matt Dinniman
Narrator: Jeff Hays
Title: Carl's Doomsday Scenario
Series: Dungeon Crawler Carl #2
Genre: SciFi, Fantasy, Humor
Format: Audiobook
Published: January 6, 2021
Where I Got It: My shelf (Audible)

Summary:
"The training levels have concluded. Now the games may truly begin."

The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can't get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive.

They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

Carl still has no pants.

They call it Dungeon Crawler World. For Carl and Donut, it's anything but a game.

Review:
Been itching to read book 2 for a hot min, but I had so many other books to dive through first. Finally got my chance!

We continue down the Dungeon with Carl and Donut. They have made it through the "Training" levels, and they will need to work harder than ever to progress. Between leveling up, they come across a couple of quests they have no choice but to take on. Even worse? Carl still has no pants.

We are really getting into it now. They have survived the beginning and now get to have some "fun". I loved watching them pick their classes and skills. They even got to change their race if they wanted. Spoiler, they stayed a cat and a human. Thank goodness. I love watching Donut being a talking cat, ordering around poor Carl.

Mango is adorable. Especially after a certain scene! OMG, I would destroy the world for that lil guy.

Not only is there action and adventure. But we got to see some political drama unfold as well. That was a hoot BUT I do worry for our team.

That ending???? Holy cannoli!!! I need to read book 3 asap.

The narrator was fantastic. I love the sound effects we get throughout the story. It really boosts the storytelling.

Overall, I def recommend this series. You need to read book 1 first, but it's such a fun and refreshing story. So cool. I wouldn't want to be a part of this, but it's fun to watch them stumble around. Am I as bad as the viewers? *ponders* Nawwwwww.

5 stars from me.

Book Review: Candy Apples and Clairvoyants by Danielle Garrett

Author: Danielle Garrett
Title: Candy Apples and Clairvoyants
Series: Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries #4.5
Genre: Fantasy, Cozy mystery, Paranormal, short story
Format: ebook
Pages: 53
Published: October 29, 2024
Where I got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
It’s Halloween night and I’ve got everything I need for a spooky good time. And by that, I mean copious amounts of chocolate and sugar, and a pile of scary movies.

But when the pumpkins have been carved and the trick-or-treaters have all gone home to count their loot, I find there’s still a spirit stirring, with a reminder from a Halloween I’d almost forgotten.

And frankly, no horror flick can top the spine-chilling prospect of time-traveling back to my high school days.

Let’s just hope I wake up in time to grab a half-price bag of peanut butter cups.

Review:
This series is just so fun. I know this is fall-y and maybe I should've waited, but I have zero patience. LOL

Here, we follow a young Ella. This is her back in High School. Young and still so naive. But still so willing to help!

Boo, there will be no more of this series after this one. I wish there were more! I love Ella and her friends/family!!! I love watching her muddle her way through! Maybe she'll be in more later? I believe there is a spin-off in this world, so I may have to dive into that.

But this was super cute. I loved seeing a young Ella running amok.

Booooooooo Chloe! Hate her face.

This was sweet, and the conclusion? It made me sad for that person. I kinda feel bad. Poor thing.

I ended up reading this one instead of the audio. I really missed the voice, but it did fine as an ebook.

All-in-all, this was a nice taste. Short and sweet. I want more though!!!!!! 5 from me.

Blodeuedd's Monday Review: Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher

Narrated by: Jennifer Pickens

Length: 11 hrs and 50 mins

Release date: 08-19-25

Publisher: Macmillan Audio

Fantasy/spotify

I do like Kingfisher, and here we got a story of a healer who has studied poisons since she was a child. Or as she tells it, she studies how antidotes, but really it is poisons.

Then the King comes calling. He thinks some one is poisoning his child Snow, and you can not say no to a King. She is taken on a journey and soon meets Snow.

Something is strange is going on in that house. Something is wrong. The child is not healthy, but why and how? She is always watched.

I liked Anja. She likes what she does, she finds it interesting and when things does not work out she wants to know why. She befriends some people at the estate and tries her best to solve this problem. But something bigger is going on.

A good story, a fairytale that Kingfisher does so well.

The only bad part was that I listened to spotify, and my hours ended 1 hour! before the end. And I had to wait 10 days for more. Ugh, stupid spotify. Yes I know you can buy more, but for 1 hour, nah.

Great story. Great narration. I have so many more Kingfisher books before me and I do enjoy that.

Healer Anja regularly drinks poison. Not to die, but to save—seeking cures for those everyone else has given up on. But a summons from the King interrupts her quiet, herb-obsessed life. His daughter, Snow, is dying, and he hopes Anja’s unorthodox methods can save her.

Aided by a taciturn guard, a narcissistic cat, and a passion for the scientific method, Anja rushes to treat Snow, but nothing seems to work. That is, until she finds a secret world, hidden inside a magic mirror. This dark realm may hold the key to what is making Snow sick.

Or it might be the thing that kills them all.

Book Review: Murder at the Mayfair Hotel by CJ Archer

Author: C.J. Archer
Title: Murder at the Mayfair Hotel
Series: Cleopatra Fox #1
Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery
Format: ebook
Pages: 395
Published: November 30, 2020
Where I got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest on Christmas Eve throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos. Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotel’s charming assistant manager. With the New Year’s Eve ball approaching fast and the hotel’s reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotel’s hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family. Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

Review:
I've seen this book everywhere, so I decided to give it a chance when it was free on Amazon. Love me a historical fiction mixed with a good mystery!!!!

Cleo Fox moves into a luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in hopes of putting the past behind her. She wants to move forward and reforge these family bonds. However, after the poisoning of a guest on Christmas Eve, her life is turned upside down. No one can be trusted, especially not Scotland Yard. With the New Year's Eve ball fast approaching and the hotel's reputation on the line, Cleo must find out who the killer is.

The first half of the book had me addicted!  I was glued. The last half? It started dragging a little bit for me. Maybe I was just anxious to find out who the killer was? IDK. I was just ready for the story to wrap up nicely, and we go on our merry way.

Plus, Cleo is supposed to be this brainiac, but she made a lot of silly mistakes and pointed fingers that made no sense. Maybe she'll tighten up in the next one? Yes, she was a bit sheltered and naive.  Maybe that iswhy she made some obvious errors.

The last couple of chapters had me glued again.

We'll see. If I come across book 2 and it is free...maybe.

I'll stamp this with 3 stars.

Audiobook Review: The Hammer of God by Arthur C. Clarke

Author: Arthur C Clarke
Narrator: Jonathan Davis
Title: The Hammer of God
Genre: SciFi
Format: Audiobook
Published: January 1, 1992
Where I Got It: My shelf (Audible)

Summary:
In the year 2110 technology has cured most of our worries. But even as humankind enters a new golden age, an amateur astronomer points his telescope at just the right corner of the night sky and sees disaster hurtling toward Earth: a chunk of rock that could annihilate civilization. While a few fanatics welcome the apocalyptic destruction as a sign from God, the greatest scientific minds of Earth desperately search for a way to avoid the inevitable. On board the starship Goliath Captain Robert Singh and his crew must race against time to redirect the meteor form its deadly collision course. Suddenly they find themselves on the most important mission in human history--a mission whose success may require the ultimate sacrifice.

Review:
I've heard about this book for years, but never gave it a chance. I decided to finally give it a read.

We are in the year 2110, and technology and AI are the least of our worries. They have cured most of them, but there is a disaster heading straight towards Earth. One huge chunk of rock could annihilate all of civilization. There are some fanatics that welcome it since they see it as an act of God. However, the greatest scientific minds want to stop it. Starship Goliath and its crew race against time to redirect the meteor.

This was certainly a story to read. It inspired many, many SciFi movies, so it was interesting for sure.

The pacing was a little slow for such a thriller and high-tension situation. I feel like there was a lot of filler and a lot of deep dives. Don't get me wrong. I like understanding the world and how we got to where we are. However, there was a lot of history lessons that didn't really help the story along.

The mix of religion was a nice touch, though. It showed that even in the future, there might be some folks trying to stop science and push their religion.

The ending. Oof.

The narrator did a good job. I liked his voices, and he helped me stay involved with the story during the info-dumping sections.

Overall, this was a good read. Just be prepared for some serious tech, history, and world info-dumping. The narrator helped me stay involved with the story and made it come to life. I'll give this 4 stars.

Audiobook Review: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Author: Kendare Blake
Narrator: Amy Landon
Title: Three Dark Crowns
Series: Three Dark Crowns #1
Genre: YA, Fantasy, Romance
Format: Audiobook
Published: September 20, 2016
Where I Got It: Borrowed from library

Summary:
When kingdom come, there will be one.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Review:
First book club book of 2026! Weeeeeee!

Here we follow three sisters. All three are queens and equal heirs to the crown, and all are magical. However, there can only be one queen to rule them all. Mirabella is an elemental. Katharine is a poisoner who can ingest poisons. Arsinoe is a naturalist. This will be a fight to the death on the night of the sisters' 16th birthday.

How cool is this concept? Def royals meets fantasy meets Hunger Games. Loved the idea and the concept. I wouldn't want to live here, but the powers would be lovely. I guess I would just want to be a civilian. I wouldn't make a good queen.

The execution of the story was...okay. It was so slow and so dry in the beginning. Yes, we are learning about the sisters and the world and the rules, etc. However, it took forever for anything to really happen. Plus, we had a lot of POVs going on. Not just the queens, but a lot of their friends, etc. Sure, I didn't mind getting a glimpse of the world, but I think I would've liked this more if it were just the queens' POVs.

Also, I did the audio of this. I wonder if I would've appreciated the multiple POVs if I did the ebook/physical book of it. It would've been easier to follow along. There were a couple of times I was confused about who was saying what. I had to rewind a couple of times. Don't get me wrong, the narrator is good! I have listened to her before, but so many POVs and soooo many characters, it is hard to have a different voice for each person.

OMG, the end. I need to read book 2. Dayum.

Oh! There was another scene a few pages back that had me audibly gasp! Holy cannoli batman!

Overall, I did enjoy myself while listening to this. I think I would've liked it more if I did a different format and/or if we have less POVs. I do want to read book 2 because things have HEATED up. I'll give this 3 stars.

TMST: Favorite Decade(s)

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog. Feel free to leave your links in the comments if you are participating.

1/27/2026 What's your favorite decade and why? (You do not need to have lived through it!)

I've been bad at joining in on this weekly posting! My goal this year is to try and do one or two a month (at minimum). They are such fun prompts!

I'm a huge history buff and I loved parts of my childhood. But what always stuck in my head was the 1760s, 1770s, and 1780s. The aesthetic is just so...beautiful. It's always been one of my favorite time periods. The looks. The fashion. The colors. It just speaks to me.

Release date: 08-28-25

Narrators: Luci Christian Bell, Andrew Eiden, Helen Laser

Length: 2 hrs and 3 mins

I like these short audible novellas. But the whole sound effect things throws me at times. I was out skiing and then suddenly there was this sound and I freaked out something was behind me, lol. But yes when you are inside it works well.

Dani and Asher became enemies in High School and now they have to plan a scavenger hunt. But this is a novella they actually talk and reach some common ground. Sometimes High School drama is not the entire world.

They have fun hanging out together and sparks fly. It was cute and short.

Good narration. I am sure I recognize the guy from other audible ones and the woman too. They work well together. And yes cool effects too that bring it to life

Years after being locked in a fierce high school rivalry, Danielle Green and Asher Williams are forced to team up again. The plan their high school reunion in New York. As they set up a citywide treasure hunt for their former classmates, old tensions reignite…along with unexpected sparks.

Book Review: The Missing Cupcake by Megan D. Wood

Author: Megan D. Wood
Title: The Missing Cupcake
Genre: Short Story, Contemporary Romance
Format: ebook
Pages: 23
Published: June 12, 2025
Where I got It: Kindle Unlimited

Summary:
Lucy works in marketing but dreams of opening her own bakery in the future. She loves testing recipes, posting her creations online, and sharing her most successful treats with the office staff. So when the caterer drops out of one of the corporate events she’s planning and a colleague volunteers her to supply the dessert—one hundred cupcakes—Lucy feels like she has to accept the challenge.

If she performs well, it could lead to the promotion she’s had her eye on, which should come with a pay raise that will help make her bakery dreams a reality.

But there’s a she has to make those one hundred cupcakes in the tiny kitchen of her one-bedroom, Boston-based apartment, and she has to do it in one night. And of course that one night is her anniversary with Ian.

Ian isn’t typically a planner, and Lucy knows he’s gone out of his way to make this anniversary extra special. But this opportunity could be huge for her—for her future, which she hopes Ian will be part of.

Her decision to spend the night in her kitchen instead of at a romantic dinner for two with Ian seems to put a strain on their relationship just as Lucy starts the daunting task of baking and decorating the cupcakes.

Can Lucy finish and deliver all of the cupcakes in time for the event? More importantly, can she do it and somehow save her relationship with Ian?

Review:
This was a random grab a few weeks ago. The cover was just so cute and I had to know about this missing cupcake. I didn't read the summary before jumping in.

Lucy wants to own her very own bakery. But that seems like a pipedream until a caterer drops out of her corporate event. And now she has a chance to show her skill! She has to make 100 cupcakes and if she succeeds, she might just get the promotion and pay raise so she can start saving for her bakery. Problem is....she has a small apartment and a small kitchen, and she only has one night to bake these cupcakes. Also....it is her anniversary with Ian. Will she be able to have her cake and eat it, too?

Do I remember what I read? Barely. And mind you...it was only like 23 pages. Everything went by in a blur, and the drama was silly. Why is she even concerned? It's just an anniversary that can be celebrated the next day or whatever. :S

Ian was immature.

Lucy was an overthinker, and she deserved better.

Sure, it seems Ian does "justice" by her at the end, but I would be pissed if he used one of the cupcakes. >_> DUDE, I have to make 100 cupcakes. Like wtf man.

I was hoping for some actual mystery and maybe more romance. The chemistry felt as flat as a pancake.

Maybe, just maybe, I'm not seeing the full picture with this romance. Maybe we need another short of them after she opens her bakery.

I'll give this 2 stars because I did like Lucy. She deserves the world and more. Go away, Ian.

Book Review: Wild Scottish Knight by Tricia O'Malley

Author: Tricia O'Malley
Title: Wild Scottish Knight
Series: The Enchanted Highlands #1
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Paranormal
Format: ebook
Pages: 316
Published: April 4, 2023
Where I got It: Kindle Unlimited

Summary:
Opposites attract in this modern-day fairytale when American, Sophie MacKnight, inherits a Scottish castle along with a hot grumpy Scotsman who is tasked with training her to be a magickal knight before the Kelpies wreak havoc on the people of Loren Brae.

The knight was supposed to be a man.

Not me, Sophie MacKnight, a marketing associate from California.

This must be a practical joke that the Scots play on visiting Americans. Because otherwise I’ve inherited a haunted castle in Scotland, along with one irritatingly sexy Scotsman, who would be delighted if I turned tail and ran.

Frankly, I thought I would fly here, sell the heap of bricks, and head back home to a life that I…well, I was comfortable with at the very least. Instead, the people of Loren Brae are in trouble, and it appears that as the new owner of the castle, I’m next in line to reinstate the magickal Order of Caledonia. Which means, first, I have to learn to believe in magick. And secondly, I have to train to become a knight.

And my trainer? None other than Lachlan Campbell, the grumpiest man I’ve ever had the annoyance of meeting. It’s a toss-up who is pricklier, Lachlan, or his kilted Chihuahua, Sir Buster. Not only does Lachlan think that I can’t hack it, but he also resents my claim on his castle.

If only he didn’t look so devastatingly hot in his kilt.

Now, I’m stuck proving myself to him, all while trying to figure out how to help my new friends in Loren Brae.

Sparks fly as our swords meet, and we battle our rising attraction for each other.

Who will win in this (Highland) game of love?

Review:
I adore this author, so I had to check this one out.

Sophie has inherited a Scottish castle from her beloved uncle. When she arrives, there is alot more than just having a castle to renovate....there are Kelpies out to destroy the village, she is a Knight, she has to learn magic, there are ghosts, and there is a grumpy man who doesn't seem to want her there.

This was a hoot. I had a lot of fun with our characters and the situation. Poor Sophie. That is a lot to take on, but she needed this adventure. She was stuck in a life she didn't truly want.

This was def a "light" fantasy, and I appreciated that. I didn't want to get too deep into the weeds of the magical world. Sure, there are real threats and some fights and dramatic moments, but it was cozy in a way.

One thing that annoyed me was that I struggled with the chemistry between these two until near the end. Maybe he was too grumpy? I loveeeee grumpy, but maybe he was just too closed off for me to buy it. Maybe they were slightly overshadowed because of the chemistry between two side characters. Their banter was on fire. Can we see them finally fall in love? IDK. I just didn't really feel their chemistry at first.

Other than that, I had a lot of fun with this story. This felt more like a fantasy chick lit tbh.

Blodeuedd's Monday Review: Evergreen by Buck Turner

Narrated by: Alexander Cendese

Length: 6 hrs and 34 mins

Release date: 01-20-26 by Tantor Media

YA Fiction(to review)

A coming of age YA book with heart and turmoil.

Cole moves with his mother and sister to a small town after his dad died in an accident. He does not want to move, or start a new school. But almost at once he befriends a pretty girl next door. One who carries a heavy past.

He meets new friends, and also does something no one dares to do. Goes up the mountain to talk with the hermit who lives there. The scary old man who is said to have killed 3 teenagers. But Cole is a good guy and together with his new friends he tries to find out what happened to those missing teenagers to clear the name of his new chess partner.

There is also faith as his new friend takes him to church and he tries to deal with the questions of could he have saved his dad if he had prayed harder?

And something unexplainable comes in at the end. I can not tell you of it, but there is something mystical in those woods.

Heart, mystery, first love and friendship.

Good narration. He had a good feel of the story and it flowed very well and I felt these different characters.

Cole Mercer is a young man angry at the world...and for good reason. After the sudden loss of his father, Cole's mother moves them hundreds of miles away from all that is familiar to the sleepy town of Evergreen, North Carolina. He struggles to settle in, but navigating difficult classmates is offset by the beautiful girl next door. And he begins to understand there's something different about this small southern town and the forest that surrounds it, which seems to have more of a presence than it should.

Nothing in Evergreen is quite what it seems.

Listeners will fall in love with Evergreen's southern charm and the love story at its center which transcends time.

Book Review: Letters from Father Christmas by JRR Tolkien

Author: JRR Tolkien
Title: Letters from Father Christmas
Genre: Fiction, Fantasy
Format: ebook
Pages: 209
Published: February 15, 2012
Where I got It: Borrowed from library

Summary:
Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R.Tolkien’s children. Inside would be a letter in strange spidery handwriting and a beautiful coloured drawing or some sketches. The letters were from Father Christmas.

They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house into the dining-room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house!

Review:
This is just so wholesome. I wish it had been available near Xmas for me, but there was a long line for this little guy! It came precisely when it meant to, I guess.

This is a compiled collection of Santa letters Tolkien wrote for his children over a span of many years. How freakin' adorable?

I honestly would love to purchase a physical version of this. Yes, the ebook was fine, but I do not think it did the drawings justice. They looked so cute and fun. Those kids were extremely blessed to have a dad do this for them.

The stories were fun and creative. What else would you expect from the legend?

The ending had me holding back tears. It was a lovely way to end the letters. I'm sure he was so upset that his kiddos were too old for the letters. You could sense it.

I would read this again, but I really want the physical version.

5 stars.
