Book Review: Mrs. Rossi's Dream by Khanh Ha

Mrs. Rossi's DreamAuthor: Khanh Ha
Title: Mrs. Rossi's Dream
Genre: Fiction
Pages: ebook
Published:  March 1st 2019
Where I Got It: My shelf (Given to me by the author/publisher for my honest and unbiased opinion)

Thus begins the harrowing yet poignant story of a North Vietnamese communist defector who spends ten years in a far-flung reform prison after the war, and now, in 1987, a free man again, finds work as caretaker at a roadside inn in the U Minh region. One day new guests arrive at the inn: an elderly American woman and her daughter, an eighteen-year-old Vietnamese girl adopted at the age of five from an orphanage in the Mekong Delta before the war ended. Catherine Rossi has come to this region to find the remains of her son, a lieutenant who went missing-in-action during the war.

Mrs. Rossi's Dream tells the stories of two men in time parallel: Giang, the thirty-nine-year-old war veteran; Nicola Rossi, a deceased lieutenant in the United States Army, the voice of a spirit. From the haunting ugliness of the Vietnam War, the stories of these two men shout, cry, and whisper to us the voices of love and loneliness, barbarity and longing, lived and felt by a multitude of people from all walks of life: the tender adolescent vulnerability of a girl toward a man who, as a drifter and a war-hardened man, draws beautifully in his spare time; the test of love and faith endured by a mother whose dogged patience even baffles the local hired hand who thinks the poor old lady must have gone out of her mind, and whose determination drives her into the spooky forest, rain or shine, until one day she claims she has sensed an otherworldly presence in there with her. In the end she wishes to see, just once, a river the local Vietnamese call "The River of White Water Lilies," the very river her son saw, now that all her hopes to find his remains die out.

Just then something happens. She finds out where he has lain buried for twenty years and how he was killed.

This book immediately drew me in with the cover and title. The summary really did me in. I had to give this a read.

The story all revolves around the Vietnam War and some of the characters who's lives where impacted by this bloody war. Mrs Rossi lost her son and is trying to find closure years after the war is ended who is traveling to Vietnam with her adopted daughter. At the same time we get to see Giang who is a veteran and Nicola Rossi during the time of the war.

It took me a while to really get into the story. I was enjoying it, but I was not sure what was really going on or what the author was trying to do. After a few pages the light-switch in my head clicked and then I got it. I was hooked and finished the book in a couple of sittings.

So beautiful and so tragic and so sad.

This book really captured the true darkness of the war and the aftermath. So many lives were destroyed. Those who lived may have survived but to face so many nightmares. War is hell indeed. I felt so bad for Giang and for Mrs. Rossi. I wanted a miracle to happen, but life doesn't always give miracles.

The jumping between timelines and POVs was a little confusing at first, but I got used to it.

I really liked Ian and his story made me sad! Sure he was just a side characters but I had hope and I adored him.

This was beautifully written and it was a good read. I did get a little tear near the end there! That last scene made my heart hurt! Oooo!

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was a little rough at the beginning until I got into the flow of things and understood what was going on. The writing was beautifully done and this book does make you think and feel. My poor heart at the end there! I do recommend this if you're looking for a good people story that shows the impact of a terrible war. I'll stamp this with 4 stars.

Book Review: Nam-A-Rama by Phillip Jennings

Author: Phillip Jennings
Title: Nam-A-Rama
Genre: Historical Fiction & Humor
Pages: 332
First Published: March 2003
Where I Got It: My Shelf (an Xmas or bday gift a million years ago...)

It starts and ends, like all the best adventures, in the air. Almost-Captain Gearheardt and his buddy, Almost-Captain Armstrong, are ferrying bodies (live in, dead out) for the CIA's Air America, but they have never forgotten their TOP SECRET orders, given when Gearheardt was delivering pizzas to the Oval Office for the CIA: Chopper into Hanoi and buy Uncle Ho a beer. Then either shoot his ass or shake his hand (the instructions get vague at this point).

And so they do, Semper Fi, pausing only to get an aircraft carrier black-flagged for bubonic plague, have an affair with Mickey Mouse, cleverly decode the message sewn into a lusty spy's black panties, commandeer a Russian truck complete with a midget Chinese 'Uncle Sam,' avenge themselves on a Cuban torturer, and dutifully experience all the Honor and Glory of the next-to-the-next-to-last war that never (God forbid) made the Nightly News.

And they do it all for laughs. Because if they were to stop laughing, where would the heartache end?

This was a DNF many moons ago. I legit only got to page 25 before I solemnly put it down and walked away. I wanted to like this. I love funny and I love military novels. So what could go wrong with blending the two? So, now that I am older and wiser, I decided to give this book another chance.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd......

No. The only difference is that I finished the book...after lots of skimming.

So...this story is about some dudes during the Vietnam War and their "adventures". Gear and Arm are two guys who have been dragged to war in crazy ways. They are given a top secret mission for the president.

SPEAKING OF WHICH. I wanted to punch the man in the face. OH MY GOD. I may not have liked the president during this time period, but in real life he was not that weasel-y, annoying, or dumb. I get what the author was trying to do. Sure. But it was not funny at all, it was more annoying.

Anyways....but yes, these fellas are on an adventure to accomplish this secret mission. The craziest things happened. Yes, I laughed a few times, but the rest was over-the-top and made me roll my eyes. I love slap-stick funny, but this was annoying.

The only silver-lining of this book was 3/4th to the end. It was good. There was some meaning there among the craziness.

The rest of the book was meh. An "eh that was kinda funny" at best. Bummer. Maybe if I had served in the war during this time, I would have liked it better? I'm not sure, but...not for me. I'm so sad!!!! I wanted to like this book. Out of five, I shall give this....2. The ending gave it a star.

Movie Review: Ali

Length: 2 hours & 47 mins
Released: 2001
Genre: Drama
Rating: R
Directed By: Michael Mann

Where I Got It: Watched on Hulu

SUMMARY:
A biography of boxing great Muhammad Ali, which focuses on the ten-year period of 1964-1974. In that time, the brash, motor-mouthed athlete quickly dominates his sport, meets and marries his first wife , converts to Islam (changing his name from Cassius Clay), and defies the United States government by refusing to submit to military conscription for duty in Vietnam. His world heavyweight champion title thus stripped from him entirely for political reasons, the champ sets about to win back his crown, culminating in a legendary unification bout against George Foreman  in Zaire, dubbed the "Rumble in the Jungle." In his travels, Ali becomes a symbol of power to disenfranchised African-Americans everywhere and meets such luminaries as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou.

TRAILER:

CAST:
  • Muhammad Ali - Will Smith
  • Drew Brown - Jamie Foxx
  • Howard Cosell - Jon Voight
  • Malcolm X - Mario Van Peebles
  • Angelo Dundee - Ron Silver
  • Don King - Mykelti Williamson
  • Sonji Roi - Jada Pinkett Smith
  • Belinda Ali - Nona Gaye

  • REVIEW:This is my second attempt at this movie. Many years ago I tried watching this with my dad, but I fell asleep. 0.0 I was only 12 at the time, so I contribute it to that.

  • Well....the results are a little better then that.

  • The beginning and part of the middle and part of the end are good. It does really make you appreciate that Mr. Ali did SO much more then just be a great boxer...he stood up for the Blacks and their rights. Will Smith was a good selection for the movie. I don't think it was his best acting in this film, but he wasn't horrible. I think he was trying too hard. The rest of the cast was okay. I always think its funny when an actor's wife is cast as the actor's character's wife. I think it's really cheesy. What makes it even funnier is that there was a lack of chemistry between the two characters. How? Why? Maybe they were trying to tone it down and they went overboard?

  • The flow of the story was okay...but I hated the huge jumps of time without any warning or any clues. I know, I know...they are covering ten years in the span of 2 hours, so they have to jump ahead to more important events. I get it...but they just skipped ahead and I would find myself confused. For example, they showed Sonji and Ali meeting and going on a date to them being in bed and getting all frisky and then a baby starts crying in the background! Wait? What? Are they know married with a child or is that her baby with someone else? They explain it, but I was still baffled.

  • It was an okay movie. Not my favorite of Will Smith's, but it was alright. If you like biography-type movies or movies with drama then this is the film for you. I'm glad that they had finally made a movie about such a great man of the time period. Mr. Ali was not only the best boxer of his generation, but he was also a man for the people. In the end, I shall stamp this with 3 stars.

  • Favorite Character(s): Ali and Don King
  • Not-so Favorite Character(s): Sonji (maybe a different actress?) and Drew (*shakes my head*)
  • RE-WATCH: Probably not.

Where I Got It: borrowed from library

An in-depth examination of the ways in which the Vietnam War disrupts and impacts the lives of people in a small industrial town in Pennsylvania.

TRAILER:

CAST:

Michael - Robert De Niro
Stan - John Cazale
Nick - Christopher Walken
Steven - John Savage
Linda - Meryl Steep
Axel - Chuck Aspegren
John - George Dzunda
Angela - Rutanya Alda

REVIEW:

OH my goodness....these actors are SO young! It was really weird to see them this young. I've seen in other films during their youths, but it always boggles my mind. Especially De Niro (played Michael). He's good looking now, but in this film he was EXTREMELY good looking. Wow. Even Christopher Walken looked good.

Anyways....

This was certainly a pick at the Vietnam War and all wars in general. They did not sugar coat anything in this film. War is nasty business and it can really destroy someone - even if they don't die or get maimed. It can cripple you or mess up your mind. I'm glad that the writers decided to show each side of the madness of war. One friend gets crippled forever, one snaps mentally. Poor Michael trying to hold everything together before, during, and after the war. He was their leader, their best friend. They guy everyone went to. I loved him, but man, did I feel bad for him.

I'm not going to lie...I usually don't watch many Vietnam War movies and I wasn't too keen on this one. However, Boyfriend REALLY wanted to watch it and so I gave in and watched it with him. Low and behold, I actually liked it. Perhaps it was because of all the actors in it. They are all fantastic! The beginning really was super slow and I nearly gave up. HOWEVER, it picks up after the deer hunt they go on. I get WHY they made the beginning slow. There are a lot of characters they wanted to establish and get you to know and understand. They wanted you to see how life was BEFORE the war. After the movie was done, I really appreciated the beginning, because it allowed me to connect with all the characters.

OH! The ending made me tear up, but it certainly was a good ending. It made me a little mad...but it certainly was good. I shall say no more.

It was a good movie and I recommend anyone who has any interest in history or likes a good movie, should watch this. The acting was wonderful. The story was engaging even though the beginning was a little slow. It was certainly worth the 3 hours. Out of five stars I shall stamp this 5 stars. It's more like 4.5, but I don't give decimals, so I rounded.

Favorite Character(s): Michael, Linda, Axel (I wish he had more camera time), and John.
Not-so Favorite Character(s): Steve, Angela (pull yourself together woman!), and Stan.
RE-WATCH: Sure.
