TMST: What do you do for fun when you aren’t blogging?

November 3rd: what do you do for fun when you aren’t blogging?

There are a lot of things I like to try and do when I am not blogging. But fun things? Mmmm.

I read...of course! I also love watching my shows and listening to music. Funny cat videos or Fail videos are a blast. Movies are fun, but I have a hard time sitting in one place for too long lately.

Animal Crossing New Horizons have taken up a lot of my hours in my life. I'm also now addicted to Overcooked 2 which I beat the main plot and now I'm playing the extra maps. BF and I love playing World War Z together. I just finished Pokemon Shield not too long ago. Sure there are extra things to do, but I beat the main plot and whatnot and I'm good for now.

Let's see.....Oooo I also love painting or crafting! I'm not great like my mom is, but I enjoy it. I used to write a lot, but I haven't really written anything in months. D:

I love hanging out with my friends. Been doing less of that because of COVID. But we still make a point to safely hang out once in a while. For instance we had a mini Halloween party on Friday. Not too many people and a big space.

Baking is another love of mine. I love trying new recipes. For that Halloween party, I made sea salt caramel, chocolate chip, and pretzel cookies. SOOOOOO good. Nom!

That is about all I can think of right now.

Blog All About it: SWEET

This month's prompt is: SWEET

Ooooo. Sweet. What a fun prompt!

For this month, I'm going to share a little bit about a new fruit I tried during my trip to California.

BF and I went to Knott's Berry Farm while there. Along with the marketplace, there is an amusement park which is what people typically go to see. We, being the cool kids we are, went to just the marketplace since they were hosting the Boysenberry Festival. They had more stores and stands inside the amusement park, but we didn't want to spend money on rides since we don't really ride them anymore.

Image result for boysenberryWhat is Boysenberry? I had zero ideas myself, so I was introduced to a new fruit in so many different forms. Here is a huge list of stuff they were selling during the festival. Click here.  We ate a Boysenberry donut, fudge, taffy, and a soda drink.
It is sweet, but not overly so. It was yummy! We wanted to buy a jam, but planes are so picky so we didn't want to chance it. I actually was able to find a bottle from Knott's Berry Farm on Amazon so I ordered it. It should be arriving in a couple of days. Nom! I'm not crazy about jam, but I bet it is going to be yummy!

Honestly, it was super fun! I highly recommend it. I did the amusement park 10 years ago and that was fun too from what I remember.

TMST: How to Beat the Winter Blues + Fun Times

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where Rainy discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.

How do you beat the winter blues?

I remember doing this prompt last year. I listed things I do personally to avoid the winter blues. This time I'll actually share what "professionals" suggest.

I found this article that is really informational. Click this link. But here is a synopsis of what they suggest:

- Keep Active.
- Go Outside
- Keep warm
- Eat Healthy foods
- Get light therapy
- Sit in front of a light box for 30 mins
- Take up a new hobby
- Stay social
- Talk about it
- Join a support group

(NHS, 2018)

One thing I like to do is drink with friends to beat the winter blues. We did that this weekend even though we got a lot of snow. BF, me and a couple of friends went to the Royal Oak Onesie Pub Crawl. It was so much fun! We even got our faces painted.

Wednesday Writing Prompt #2

Happy Wednesday everyone! For Xmas I bought myself a little writing prompt journal. I just now started writing in it. For fun I'll share some of the prompts that I've written. Feel free to join in with your answers! I'm really curious to see what everyone else says.

1) Give your city (or town or region) a new name that reflects what type of a place it is, and explain why you chose that name.

Curve City. There is not a straight road in this city. There are so many lakes, the developers legit had to develop the roads around the lakes. It takes forever to get somewhere. Love the lakes, I do, but it is frustrating.

A view at my apartments

2) Write about something presently in your life that is "worth it".

Working is worth it. I would rather be at home making cookies and cleaning. However, I know myself. Without my own income and independence, I would hate my life. I would feel deprieved and locked away. Working allows me to get out, socialize, and get paid. It's totally worth it.

3) You are the wind's interpreter. What is it saying?

HUMANS SUCK! Die humans, die. Oh! Look! A piece of garbage! Oh! Look! Someone dropped money.....now it's gone. HA!

4) Come up with a mathematical formula to express something you know/believe.

Hard work + Kindness + Love + Humor + Responsibility - Religion - Hate = A decent world

Saturday Scribbling Challenge #3

This is a fun little writing challenge that Blodeuedd and I have come up with! We each challenge each other with the selected theme.

The second challenge is a mix of a photo and a quote. Of course, feel free to join in and share your own stories with the selected theme of the month!

First....my challenge to Blodeuedd:

The Ones who Walked Before by Blodeuedd

The gate was falling apart, one last remnant of those who walked before, but these days everyone worshiped the one god. The god brought over by the conquerors. The god who thrived on blood sacrifices and mindless killings. But that it was happened when everyone just fell to their knees and gave up. Gave up in the face of adversity and forgot who they were. And now they kissed the feet of the Mighty Elkins, and worshiped to the sounds of screams in the temples of Akatan.

Ronan could see  smoke in the distance and wondered if this time it would be different. The last rebellion had failed, but this time one of the ones who walked before had risen to lead the rebellion. Not the one whose temple gate Ronan guarded, but another one. The one who gave shelter from the rain, and fed your hunger. All while Ronan stood guard over the one who hugged you close and embraced you in your final hour. But then he did not want to be there, he was no coward, but this was his sacred duty as a Knight of Old. Protect the one who walked before until death. He could not leave, he would not leave.

A dragon roared in the distance, and he knew that rebellion would be crushed. One did not win over the Fire beasts. It was just not done. More of the ones who walked before would have to wake up to win this time. He leaned his head against his staff and sighed. No one came here anymore, they were afraid. They were forgetting and the old ones would never wake. They would remain slaves and the one god would spread his rule of blood worship.

He was the last one.

He would remain the last one.

Now, Blodeuedd's challenge to me:

The Shadows of Justice by Carole Rae

All his life he dreamed of being a somebody. He dreamed of the crowds calling his name and women swooning at his mere presence. All he wanted was to be loved and wanted. The very thought of it made his heart beat and swell. However, it could never be. He could never be anybody, but a shadow in the night. No one could ever know the powers he possessed. This was not some Marvel or DC comic. This was the real and dark world. People with powers or who thought they had power are ridiculed, mocked, locked away, or simply vanished. Heroes do not exist and are not worshiped like Superman or Batman. Its a fairy-tale.

Donning his black cloak, he hid in the shadows and made his contribution to the betterment of this world this way. No adoring crowds, just the gurgle of blood and pleading eyes of the evil-doers who harmed the innocent.

He has no name like the fake heroes of the comics. He is just the shadow of justice that cleans up those who fall through the cracks of Lady Justice's scales.

A light breeze jostled his cloak as he stood motionless on one of the decaying roofs over this once luminous town. A grim look sat on his face. There were so many bad and evil things in this world and no matter how much he tried he couldn't save everyone and those he did save never gave him a thank you. He wish he could say that no thanks were needed.....but his heart deemed that a lie. All he ever wanted was to be loved and rewarded for his kind gifts to humanity. Would it be easier to just do nothing like everyone else? Ignore the pain and the suffering? It would be, but even though he was a just a shadow and no one knew what he did night after night, he made an oath and a promise to do good and rid the world of darkness.

Saturday Scribbling Challenge #2

The second challenge is a mix of a photo and a quote. Of course, feel free to join in and share your own stories with the selected theme of the month!

First....my challenge to Blodeuedd:

My Tree by Blodeuedd

I'd like to tell you a story of a girl I used to know. She had hair fair as sunshine, she had eyes sparkling like emeralds. She had a tongue that could suck the life out of you.

I met her one rainy night on the Brooklyn Bridge.

"What are you doing good Sir?" She asked as she strolled by, as if the sun had been shining and the weather warm.

I was sitting on the rail looking at the water. Down on my luck. Not a dime to spare, not a thought of others in my mind.

"What do you think," I said as she came to sat next to me. Dangling her legs and laughing in the rain. Looking down and grinning right back at me. And I stared, how I stared. She was beautiful. Then rain did not even seem to touch her and her smile it brightened the darkest night.

"Come on, let me buy you pie." She said and gave me her hand.

I took it and together we find a diner. It was the best pie I had ever had, and I was a goner. She was all I could think of, all I could dream of, all I could imagine having. We spent a few glorious days together, making love and laughing. I did not even notice how I seem to shrink into myself. Like the air itself was sucked from my lungs.

It ended a sunny afternoon. She took me to the woods, she said she wanted to get out of the city. I had a ring in my pocket, a ring I had stolen the night before. It was a work of air with a sapphire on it that would had cost me a fortune to earn. It seemed to burn a hole through the pocked, and I could not wait to give her it.

She took me to a tree, a tree sporting fall colors and she dreamily looked up.

"This is my tree, "she told me with her silken voice. A knowing smile on her face.

"Ok," I said and she leaned in to kiss me.

"My tree, " she whispered and sucked the last life out of me.

And this is now where I am, a ghost tied to a tree with so many more. But I still get to see her when she brings men to us. Men to die, Men to be buried under the roots. We all long to see her one last time.....

Now, Blodeuedd's challenge to me:

The Transformation by Carole Rae

The only word they allow me to say is yes. I have no choices. I was born into this and I cannot escape my fate. Tomorrow is the day and it is eating me alive…..

Gently, I close my diary. The ring of my pack sparkles under the candle light. It just lies there so solid and so unescapable. A sigh leaves my lips as I roll back over. I force my eyes close. I might as well get some sleep before the day of my first change happens.

I am lightly shaken away, “Daughter, daughter.” I peel my eyes open and my lovely mother is leaning over me with a soft smile, “Let us get you ready. There is some breakfast for you.” As I sit up, I grab the golden ring with a green emerald center. There is a serpent intertwined with the diamonds and emerald. In the mouth there is a diamond. Its eyes seem to be boring into my soul every time I look it.

Mother leads me to a seat in front of the mirror. I refuse to look at myself in the mirror. Mother gently brushes my dark black hair and she goes on and on about the ceremony and the transformation. She tries to comfort me and encourage me to eat the food before me. I only nod and do not take any food.
Once mother is done with brushing my hair and make-up, she lightly places my golden band on my head. The pearls lay coldly on my forehead, “You are the most beautiful, my dear. Look at yourself.” I do as she says and look up. I stare into my eyes and I can see the fear there.

~*~
The doors are opened and I stand by the opening. Our pack file out one by one. Each person congratulates me and offers me a hug and some offer me some words of advice. Finally everyone is gone except my parents and me. They each hug me and kiss my forehead. Before mother leaves she touches my cheek, “My dear girl. Do not be scared. It will hurt since it is your first. I love you very much and…..I am sorry, but the pack is your family and this….this IS a gift. You will see.” I say nothing as they leave.

The sun is setting and I just stand at the door. I pull my cloak over my head and stare down at my ring. The serpent’s white eyes glitter and stare at me. I touch the diamond and let out a huge sigh.
The moment the sun has set a huge pain strikes my body and heat takes over my body. I fall to my knees. I rip my black cloak off and begin to crawl away from the black doors. The moon is hidden behind the clouds and rain begins to pour down. It feels good on my burning skin.

It feels like the skin from my body is being torn away. I can barely breathe! I had made a promise to transform with dignity, but a scream rips from my throat and tears pour as hard as the rain around me. I fall to my side and cry out curses to my pack and this “gift”. The pain grows and grows and I want this to end. I scream to the point that my throat is raw.
I black-out for just a moment.

The rain stops as I open up my eyes. My view is weird and everything is sharper and clearer. Standing up, I go over to a puddle. My reflection is no longer of me, but a black and white wolf. I want to cry, but all I do is howl to the now shining moon.

Interview with Hannah Fieldings

Today, we have a special guest on the blog! May we have a nice warm applause fr Hannah Fielding, the author of the new book 'Indiscretion'! She was so sweet to have an interview with me.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in Alexandria, Egypt, a city founded in the year 332 BC by order of Alexander the Great, a Greek king of Macedonia. The rambling house in which I grew up was built on a hill facing the Mediterranean, commanding the most breathtaking views of the ever-changing sea, with its glowing sunsets and romantic moonlit nights.

I went to a convent school, and after I graduated with a BA in French literature, my international nomadic years started. I lived mainly in Switzerland, France and England, and holidayed in other Mediterranean countries like Italy, Greece and Spain. After falling in love with my husband, we settled in a Georgian house in Kent where I brought up our two children, while looking after horses and dogs and running my own business renovating rundown cottages.

My children have now flown the nest, and my husband and I spend half our time in our Georgian rectory in Kent and the rest in our home in the South of France, where I write novels overlooking spectacular views of the Mediterranean.

Tell me about your new book, Indiscretion

Indiscretion is the story of a young woman’s journey of discovery that takes her to a world of forbidden passion, savage beauty and danger.

The setting is spring, 1950. Alexandra de Falla, a young half-English, half-Spanish writer, abandons her privileged but suffocating life in London and travels to Spain to reunite with her long-estranged family.

Instead of providing the sense of belonging she yearns for, the de Fallas are riven with seething emotions, and in the grip of the wild customs and traditions of Andalucia, all of which are alien to Alexandra.

Among the strange characters and in the sultry heat of this country, she meets a man who awakens emotions she hardly knew existed. But their path is strewn with obstacles: dangerous rivals, unpredictable events and inevitable indiscretions. What does Alexandra’s destiny hold for her in this flamboyant land of drama and all-consuming passions, where blood is ritually poured on to the sands of sun-drenched bullfighting arenas, mysterious gypsies are embroiled in magic and revenge, and beautiful dark-eyed señoritas hide their secrets behind elegant lacy fans?

Indiscretion is a story of love and identity, and the clash of ideals in the pursuit of happiness. Can love survive in a world where scandal and danger are never far away?

Who is Alexandra de Falla?

Alexandra de Falla is a spirited half-English, half-Spanish woman. She is intelligent, sensitive and curious, but most of all a romantic – in fact, she has made a career of writing romance novels. To escape the stifling background of post-war England in the fifties, but mostly to find her roots, she embarks on a journey to Andalucia, where she meets her estranged Spanish family. At El PavÏŒn she comes up against the bigotry of 1950s Spain – the hero, his family and the wider society all adhere to ways she does not understand, and indeed condemns because to her they belong in the dark ages. Proud and a staunch individualist, Alexandra recklessly follows her own naïve star, and, in view of the times and the places, almost ruins her life. Still, she definitely has an emotional freshness which comes through immediately, a quality that Salvador, being a conservative Spanish male, finds highly attractive. Her unworldliness might land her in trouble, but nevertheless, her innocence is not without charm.

Alexandra is therefore a heroine caught in an inner battle between being ‘modern’ and being ‘old fashioned’ in terms of how she reacts to family responsibilities and to the men she meets.

Out of all places in the world, why Spain?

I am an incorrigible romantic, and Spain is a land of flamboyance and drama. Where else do men flirt with death every afternoon for entertainment? The people are intense; their culture, their music, their traditions personify passion and fire. Even their national dish paella is a rainbow of vivid colours, with a flavour to match. Life is lived to the full. The Spanish seem to be totally in tune with James Dean’s immortal words, ‘Live as if you’ll die today.’

For me Andalucia, in southern Spain, where the action of Indiscretion takes place, is overflowing with bygone charm. All year azure skies, dazzling sunshine and sweetly fragranced gardens… colour, romance, emotion and the flamboyant figure of a flamenco dancer or the torero in the arena, sword and cape in hand, beneath the scorching sun.

The fiestas and ferias are charged with music and dance, conjuring an image of open air, moonlit skies, and all the aromas that a warm summer’s night has to offer. Women in bright-coloured dresses and silk shawls carrying rainbow-painted fans in brilliant designs, the ladies’ secret language of love. Courting couples on horseback or dancing the most evocative sevillanas. The crowded little terraces underneath the orange trees that dot the pavements and the maze of winding, narrow streets that provide shade from the hot sun. The dazzling, quaint pueblos blancos, white-washed villages hanging on steep cliffs, their houses huddled around a ruined Moorish castle, piercing the deep-blue sky. The peasants working in the fields, with their sparkling black eyes and their faces weathered like the bark of the native olive trees in the breathtakingly dramatic landscapes. The wide avenues lined with spectacular purple Jacaranda trees. The splendour of the magnificent buildings and monuments.

These are some of my sources of inspiration which portray the vibrant world and fruitful diversity of the culture of Spain; but they are only the tip of the iceberg. Wherever you turn, romance is present… what else could I do but fall in love with this magical country?

What is one thing you want people to take away from this book?

My romance novel Indiscretion poses a question: Can love survive in a world where scandal and danger are never far away? Alexandra feels torn between her two heritages, her two families, and two ways of life. Her attempt to reconcile these within herself is one of the main themes of my novel.

No one falls in love by choice, it’s by chance. So what are the ingredients for true love? Some people say that true love is when you don’t need to compromise. In my opinion, that is a rather simplistic answer. If that were the case, Salvador and Alexandra would never reach their happy ever after. Love takes work and compromise. When you compromise, you are not diminishing yourself: it doesn’t mean you’re wrong and the other person is right; it means that you value your relationship more than your ego.

Salvador, this Spanish man with unshakeable traditions and values, is mature enough to understand that. And because his love for Alexandra is so strong and deep, he knows when it is time to put his pride to one side and grab what life and love are offering him. For her part, Alexandra realises she should put things in perspective; the future might not be paved with roses, but she loves Salvador and he loves her, and nothing else in the world should count.

But that is not the only message I would like Indiscretion to convey to my readers. Family is very important to me. I was brought up in a rambling house in Alexandria which was pretty much like El PavÏŒn, surrounded by an equally sprawling family clan whose lives were all intertwined with each other. For lunch my grandmother sat at the head of a table of fifteen members of her family, which included her children and their spouses and her grandchildren. We were a clan. There were parameters within which everyone had a role. If a stranger came into our midst, the clan immediately drew together as if threatened by the outsider. A close family life can be stifling sometimes, but it also gives you strength and a sense of belonging.

I enjoyed imagining Alexandra’s experience of entering this sort of environment. Similarly, this happened to me when I married my English husband. I thought I knew England well, but despite my very international education and my numerous travels to England and other parts of the world, visiting and living in a place are very different things: different weather, different culture, and different prejudices! My English life is now my own and I am very comfortable with it, but it is a very different world to the one in which I grew up, and writing Indiscretion was not only an exercise in writing a romance story set in a place about which I love to dream, but also an interesting adventure of exploration for me.

What are you currently working on now if you don't mind my asking?
My next book, to be published mid-summer 2015, is Masquerade, the sequel to Indiscretion and Book #2 in The Andalucian Nights Trilogy. It is set in the second half of the seventies and is the story of Luz, Alexandra’s daughter, living in the New Spain that has opened its borders to outsiders and is preparing to enter the European Union.
Set in a very different era to that into which Alexandra was thrown, but one that nevertheless has its problems, Masquerade is a story of forbidden love, truth and trust in a world of secrets, revenge and mystery. Are appearances always deceptive?
In 2016, my readers can look forward to Book #3, Legacy.

Greece and Egypt, two captivating countries with huge historical and cultural heritages, are also on the map for settings in new Hannah Fielding romantic novels.

I still have many books in me. For me, being a writer is not about publishing. It is simply about writing – writing from the heart the books that I most want to read. As the great American writer Toni Morrison said, ‘If there’s a book you want to read and it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.

Again, thanks Hannah for the interview! :)
