Book Review: Hollywood Stories

Author:  Stephan Schochet
Title: Hollywood Stories
Genre: Nonfiction, biography
Pages: e-book
First Published: November 29th, 2010
Where I Got It:
Read this and reviewed this for Promotional Book Tours at Ever After pr to give my honest opinion.

"Just when you thought you've heard everything about Hollywood comes a totally original new book -- a special blend of biography, history and lore.

Hollywood Stories is packed with wild, wonderful short tales about famous stars, movies, directors and many others who have been a part of the world's most fascinating, unpredictable industry!

What makes the book unique is that the reader can go to any page and find a completely engaging and illuminating yarn. Sometimes people won't realize that they are reading about The Three Stooges or Popeye the Sailor until they come to the end of the story. The Midwest Book Review says Hollywood Stories is, "packed from cover to cover with fascinating tales."

Full of funny moments and twist endings, Hollywood Stories features an amazing, all-star cast of legendary characters and icons and will keep you totally entertained!"

I read this for Ever After pr. When this book was offered I jumped up on it and was one of the first to sign up! Being a girl in love with the old films and the old time actors/actresses this seemed like the book for me.

I'll be honest though...I'm a little upset about this book. This book let me down. Yes, I highly enjoyed the little stories about actors and directors and etc. I remember my mom telling me some of these, so it was fun to see the story told by an "expert". Many of the stories made me giggle, laugh, or "awwwww".

The part of the book that was a disappointment was the tone and set up of the book. I'm pretty sure Stephen Schochet wasn't a writer and this was his first book. However, I would LOVE to sit in on his tour. He seems like he would be an amazing tour guide! It just didn't seem to work transferring the stories he tells unto paper just....didn't....seem to work well.

Overall, I enjoyed the stories themselves but not the way the stories were presented and written. I did like Stephen Schochet's tone and I would love to go on one of tours, but his writing style didn't really do it for me. It's hard to explain, but it is the way it is. Don't let my slightly negative view keep you away from checking out this book...you'll enjoy reading the stories of Hollywood's granddaddys and grandmamas. Out of five stars, I have no choice but to give this 2 stars. :(

Oh, I don't really have any favorite characters or not-so favorite characters, so I'll skip this. ^.^

Book Review: Relatively Close

Author:  Judy Serrano
Title: Relatively Close (Lilly's series #3)
Genre: Drama, Action, Romance, Suspense, Thriller
Pages: e-book

First Published: Feburary 3rd, 2012
Where I Got It: Read this and reviewed this for Promotional Book Tours at Ever After pr to give my honest opinion.

"Recovering from the latest family trauma has made the Montiago family wake up to the fact that their priorities have definitely been misplaced. With Max throwing himself into the depths of his work as an FBI operative, he inadvertently sends the wrong message to his wife and brothers. In Relatively Close, the third book of the series, Lilly fights for the attention of her husband, until it becomes painfully clear that she is up against a mistress way more powerful than the ones she has fought before. Keeping it relatively close is something with which Lilly is way too familiar. She turns her attentions to another, only to find out that the reality of the business, which has kept her dripping in diamonds and living in mansions, is nothing more than an ugly reminder of El Diablo anda suelto: The devil running loose."

This is the third installment to the Lilly series by Judy Serrano and I'm afraid...it will not be the last. I believe there is one more book on the way. I'm really looking forward to it! Just as a warning: do not read this book unless you read the others. You will be confused, because a lot of the past events have a LARGE play in this one.

The drama continues and there are more twists and turns and WTF factors at play here. Some old characters glide into the plot and I was surprised at some of the reunions. I didn't expect to see some of these characters again, however, it was pretty interesting how Judy Serrano tied past events into this one. Everything is coming together nicely and I was slightly upset that there will be another book. Personally, I would have ended with this one, but since there will be another one I will have to read it, because I NEED TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS! This series is highly addicting.

My heart broke in this one...I lost my love for Hector. I hate to give this little spoiler, but I'm upset at Judy Serrano for doing this, but some unpleasant characterizations of Hector was brought on stage and it ruined him for me. I'm now on the Max-Lilly team. I'm still not a huge fan of Max, but he's "proved" to be the best of all three brothers for Lilly. I must be honest though...I have a slight resentment towards everyone in this book, because I feel like the are horrid role-models for their kids. Those poor kids are going to have serious complexes when they get older! Especially Junior, because he is the eldest and as been there since day uno. It makes me feel bad for them. I can't imagine seeing my mom flip-flop between my dad and my uncle. I would be have to find me a good therapist!

Anyways, I found the drama in this a little cheesy at points and I would find myself rolling my eyes, but I love it. I love every minute! I still don't understand why these men fawn all over Lilly, but I am slightly envious of all these extremely hot men being in love with her. I wouldn't want to live such a crazy life-style of gangs and drugs and etc, however it would make me big-headed if hot men like these three fawned all over me....

Besides for some cheesy points and a few grammar issues, I can not complain much this book. I finished it in just a couple days and I can't wait for the next one. Out of all the others in the series, I believe this one is my favorite so far. Well, I would recommend this to those that love a good book stuffed with drama, gun-play, gangs, hot men, and a good suspense/thriller. I've been fighting with myself on what rating to give this one...so I'll give it 5 stars. It's more like 4.5 stars, but like you know I always round my ratings. ^.^

Favorite Characters: Hector (at the beginning), Diego (he redeems himself at every page), Julia and Junior
Not-so Favorite Character(s): Juan, Victor, Max, Lilly (uuuuuggggghhhh), and Hector (at the end)

Book Review: Hunter Moon

Author:  Cait Lavender
Title: Hunter Moon
Genre: Contemporary, Drama, Action, Fantasy, Comedy

Pages: e-book

First Published: March 1st, 2012
Where I Got It: Given to me to read and review for Ever After Pr

"Bawling cattle tore Shelby Flint from her bed. With lawyer fees to pay in her struggle to keep her ranch from the clutches of her greedy cousins, she couldn’t afford the loss of even one calf. When she sees a large wolf circling her cows, she aims and fires. While the wolf escapes, Shelby can’t seem to get away from her troubles when a marijuana grower sets up shop on her land, sabotaging her property and eventually coming after her. Adding to that, a handsome game warden is poking his nose into her business and working his way underneath her skin. Shelby will have to fight harder than she ever fought before to keep from losing heart and everything she ever loved."

Like earlier stated...I read this for Ever After Pr for my honest opinion.

The cover may be slightly crappy, but don't let that keep you away from this book! Just summary alone makes me want to re-read this. Perhaps it was the promise that all the reviews I've for this book was positive or I'm a huge werewolf kick right now. Well, I love those werewolves, but lately I've been wanting read non-stop werewolf fun!

The story began off a little slow and it made me groan slightly. Once the game warden appeared in all his yummy-ness I was instantly hooked. After introducing his character and a few tense moments, the story died a little for four chapters, but then it picked up again. Perhaps Cait Lavender did this on purpose; the calm before the storm? I don't know, but once I got past those four or so chapters I could NOT put this down. I even stayed awake WAY past my bedtime and had to force myself out of bed for work in the morning. I'm a bad kid, I know.

On surface both Shelby and Cash (the game warden) seem like they would be shallow, 2D, perfect characters, but they aren't. I was so happy that Cait Lavender avoided that ditch and made all her characters very believable and 3D. Even the side characters had some very good depth. Even the womanizer brother of Cash had some depth. ^.^ I really liked Shelby (the main chicka), because she was kick-ass. She could handle herself and I would be a lucky gal if she were to be my friend. I loved her sarcasm and her sassyness. She doesn't take anyone's crap. In some odd way, she reminded me cowgirl version of my friend Anee. I loved Cash too...he is the only man alive that can keep up with Ms.Sarcastic-cowgirl-who-could-kick-your-rump.

Not only did the characters have some nice realness to them, but the story also had a lot of depth and complex parts. I wasn't expecting the story to have so many layers, which it did and I loved it! I thought I had everything figured out, but Cait Lavender would throw another curve-ball to the story.

There was a lot I loved about this book and I don't have enough time or energy to do so, so I'll just skip to part I hated. The ending made me want to scream! I nearly killed my poor Kindle Fire. I kept trying the next page, but nothing appeared! I kept sliding the screen, but there was no more! Many people have had this situation occur to them when they ended the book. I feel like Cait Lavender just pushed me off a cliff and I'm hanging by a piece of string. It was a great cliff-hanging ending, don't get me wrong, but WHY CRUEL FATES!? WHY? *clears throat* Sorry, but now I'm dying to get my hands on the second book. I believe this is going to be a trilogy. Mhmmm. Not 100% sure, but I know there is another one coming out someday.

Anyways, this was a wonderful read and I'm simply dying to read the sequel. My eye is slightly twitching, because of the ending. Cruel author! Very cruel. Well...besides for the ending I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend this for those that love a nice love story, action, drama, a smoking hot game warden, and a kick-ass heroine. I grant this one 4 stars.

Book Review: Brother Number 3

Author:  Judy Serrano
Title: Brother Number 3 (Lilly Series #2)
Genre: Romance, Drama, Action, Fiction, Suspense

Pages: ebook, 275

First Published: June 15th, 2011
Where I Got It: Given to me to read and review for Ever After Pr

"Coming in third place was something that was all too familiar to Hector Montiago. As his strength and grounding personality pushes him into first place with the woman he loves, lines are crossed and sides are chosen.

In this second book of the series, Brother Number Three depicts family ties in a light unequal to any other. Lilly tells the story of how the brothers unite in the effort to recover her missing son, as blood becomes both the indestructible bond that holds them together and the opposing force that pushes them apart. Read on as they fight temptation while the enemies of the Montiago cartel unleash their wrath, only to discover that the true danger lies within."

This is the second book in the Lilly Series. I would recommend reading the first book first, because there are is a lot of back-story that isn't mentioned in here and is assumed the reading knows what is going on.

I thought I would be super excited, because Hector was going to get his own book, but no...this was in Lilly's POV, but Hector had more air-time. After getting over my disappointment, I began to enjoy reading this. It isn't as good as the first novel, but I did like this one.

It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time! There was so much uncertainty, drama, and a threat of some sort of attack the entire time. I loved it! There was a lot more drama, gun fights, betrayals, and romance in this one then the first novel of the series. Even though I wanted to shoot Lilly myself, I still enjoyed myself. There's something about these books that keep wanting me more. I am DYING to read the third book of the series, because Judy Serrano left us, readers, with a titanic sized ending. I kept trying to find another page, but there was no more. I wanted to fall on my hands and knees and scream, "NOOOOOOOOO!" It was a fantastic ending, however. ^.^

I'll say it...I hate Lilly. I don't know why the author made her the way she did; blond, dumb, and must be in possession of a love potion. Every single hot man wants her in some way, shape, or form. However, she's dumber than a pile of bricks. WHY?WHY must you torture me this way Judy Serrano? At some points I would just shut down my kindle and read my college textbooks so I could reclaim some of my IQ.

Sorry about that...as you can probably tell I'm not a Lilly fan. I wish Lilly was different. Okay, I am rambling. Anyways, at certain points I felt like there was an overabundance of drama. Yes, it is a drama, but I feel like there is so much drama that it's unrealistic. I do love love triangles and drama, but sometimes it seemed over-the-top and the author was just adding it to add more pages.

Overall, this was more soap opera-ish than the first novel, but I liked it. If you are big into drama, romance, gun-flinging, suspense, and hot HOT Mexican men/gangsters then this is the novel for you. I certainly can NOT wait to read the next one. Out of five stars I grant this one 3 stars. It would be 3.4, but I rounded.

Favorite Character(s): Hector (yummah), Regina, and Diego (He's such a good guy now...he certainly has redeemed himself)
Not-so Favorite Character(s): Max (I still don't like him), Johnny (At first I liked him, but he's...ugh), Jorge (a beast), and Lilly (I wonder why)

Book Review: Being Human

Author:  Patricia Lynne
Title: Being Human
Genre: YA Fiction, fantasy, and a touch dystopia

Pages: e-book, 284

First Published: August 25th, 2011
Where I Got It:Given to me to read and review for Ever After Pr

"For Tommy, there is only one thing he needs to do: survive.

Only surviving isn't that easy. The hunt for blood can be tricky when humans know to fear the night. Desire sits on the edge of his mind, urging him to become the monster humans think he is. Vampire Forces, a special branch of police, is determined to turn every vampire to ash. Tommy included.

The only human Tommy can trust is his twin brother. A bond connects them, and with Danny's help, Tommy starts to understand the human world he struggles to survive in. He'll learn what friendships means and feel the sting of betrayal, find that sometimes the worst monsters are very human, and come to understand that family means more than blood.

Tommy just wants to survive and he knows what he needs to do. But with the number of humans that mean more to him than a meal growing, he'll learn there's more to life than simple survival. He'll discover being human doesn't mean being a human."

This is the first Patricia Lynne book I've read and the first YA vampire tale I've read since Breaking Dawn. I can finally say I'm back on the train of vampire novels (as you can tell, because I've read two of them in a row). I'm still team Werewolf, but hey...I love me some vampires. Being Human not only sated my need for a good vampire story, but a nice YA book also.

The first thing I would like to point out is that Patricia Lynne wrote vampires on how I see them: survival-orientated. Blood is the first thing they care about and are more beast than human. I was excited to read how I perceive the vampire-kind. Thank you Ms. Lynne. Thank you!

Being Human was an interesting book and kept my attention for the most part. My attention did tend to drift off at certain points, because I found Tommy (the main dude) a little boring. I don't know, but I'm not a big Tommy fan. Well, I felt mostly neutral towards him. I didn't loath him and I didn't adore him...he was just there. Perhaps it was because he was just there. Throughout the story he would just get blood once a week and visit his twin. For the majority of the book I was...well...bored.

The first and third part of the book was very, very boring (in my opinion). The story was stagnant and nothing would happen for pages and pages at a time. However, I did find some of Tommy's musings rather interesting and his questions funny. For example...he didn't get the point on couples going out for dates. He didn't understand how that helped people's "survival" or make the relationship "better". I found it very interesting and very realistic for if vampires were real.

I also loved how Ms. Lynne had Tommy find some of his humanity back. He did find out some main points on being human (note...TITLE OF BOOK, haha). He may have been a "monster", but deep inside he did retain some of his past human traits. He had the ability to be self-conscious, have will-power, have some sort of compassion, and most of love. It made me made that the people of this book were more heartless than the vampires themselves. If you sympathized with the "monsters" then you were now the out-group and beaten. If you happened to become a vampire, then you were shunned and if caught they would do experiments on you and then kill you publicly. At times the humans were more monsterly than the monsters themselves. Horrible. However, if vampires were uncovered in our time, I bet their fates wouldn't be much different.

ANYWAYS, this was an interesting book and I liked it. The only thing that really makes me not LOVE this book was how slow the tempo was. Yes, yes, I know not every story should be fast-paced and whatnot, but I couldn't help but skim some areas. Other than the slow bits, I really liked the story and I'm so happy someone else envisions vampires the way I do! They are NOT human and NOT Edward Cullen. Yes, vampires still retain some human qualities, but the first thought for them is survival.

ANYWAYS, sorry...I keep regressing and getting off topic.

Overall, I did like this book and I wish I could love it like everyone else...but the slow parts made me not a happy reader. I loved the world that was presented. It felt like a possible world that would exist if vampires were uncovered. I would recommend this to YA lovers and vampire book lovers. I would caution twilighters to stay away, because this is nothing like the Twilight books. I do like the Twilight books, but this is left field. Out of five stars I grant this one 3 stars. In all reality it would be 3.4, but I don't give decimals, so I rounded.

Favorite Character(s): Danny (such a great guy) and Mackenize (Tommy's niece, she was funny and the happy-go-lucky character)
Not-so Favorite Character(s): VF (buttcheeks. They are NO better than the vamps)

Book Review: Easter's Lilly

Author:  Judy Serrano
Title: Easter's Lilly (1st of Lillly's series)
Genre: Romance, Action, Drama, Fiction
Pages: e-book, 296

First Published: December 16th, 2010
Where I Got It: Given to me to read and review for Ever After Pr

"It was Easter Sunday; the day Lilly's life went from safe and comfortable to dangerously unfamiliar. Her transformation takes her from a small town girl having an affair with a low ranked gangster in the Montiago crime syndicate, to a woman of grace and fortitude married to the head of the organization.Easter's Lilly is an inspired journey from the idyllic to the darker side of self-discovery. Read as the over-privileged brothers embark on their journey that twists and turns down the road of unbridled passion in this first book of the series."

This is the first book I've read by Judy Serrano and the first book of the series. I'll admit it...I can't wait to read the next one!

At first I was a little unsure if I would actually like this one or not. It was a little sluggish and I couldn't stand Lilly (the heroine). However, once the action and drama heated up I was drawn like a moth to the flame. It was hard to walk away from. Judy Serrano has a way with words and she did a wonderful job making the action and gun play seem realistic. Unlike a lot of books it seems forced and its hard for me to envision whats going on.

Not only was I entranced by the words and action, but I was very interested in the darker side of the world. We've all heard of the drug lords and etc, but it was interesting to see "behind the scenes". You have to be careful each and every step or you'll end up dead. I loved the tension and the story of love between Max and Lilly. It was such a cute and innocent romance, buuut I can't stand Max or Lilly. How odd?

I feel like Lilly is suffering from the Bella-Swan syndrome. I'll say it bluntly...Lilly is an idiot. However, every SINGLE man "falls" in love with her. How? Why? Yes, she's pretty, but she's an idiot. I don't understand it. Her personality is highly flawed, like Bella Swan from the Twilight saga, but every yahoo wants her and "needs" her. I simply don't understand.

ANYWAYS, sorry for the rant up there.

The ending was a love-hate thing for me. I felt like there were many different ending the author picked, but she just added them all and ended with a ginormous cliff-hanging. I mean HUGE! I felt like I was running along with the story at full speed, then I tripped over a rock and slide off the edge of a cliff and now I'm dangling by with by a twig. That's how I feel with that ending. Yes, cliff-hangers are a good thing, but you can't just leave it the way she did! *SPOILER ALERT* She ended it with Lilly's first child being kidnapped! All you read is that they're looking for the child, while Lilly is cuddling with Little Diego's teddy bear. UGGGH! It's driving me bananas *END OF SPOILER* However, I loved the ending. It's a great way to make the readers wanting to read the next in the series. Brava, Judy Serrano! Brava!

Besides for Lilly and my love-hate for the ending, I really enjoyed this book. It was certainly an adventure and a drama! I can defiantly see this becoming a TV show or a movie. If it were to become either of the two, I would watch it. I would recommend this to those who would love a good action/drama, gangster lovers, and for those who just like a good book. Out of five stars I grant this one 4 stars. ^.^

Favorite Character(s): Hector (such a sweety), the beginning Max (a sweetheart) , and Little Diego (just a cute kid)
Not-so Favorite Character(s): Lilly (she is suffering from Bella-Swan syndrome) and near the end Max (I have a bad feeling about him...)

Book Review: The Prophet - The New Brotherhood

Author:  KJ Dahlen
Title: The Prophet: The New Brotherhood
Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Pages: ebook, 200 pages
First Published: September 28th, 2010
Where I Got It: Given to me to read and review for Ever After Pr

"After a three year search for a serial killer known as The Prophet, FBI agents Sean Sebastian and Rheta Morgan; both who have a personal reason to stop him, finally get a break and The Prophet is within their reach. Confrontation leads them to discover a secret network called the New Brotherhood and the more they find out about the New Brotherhood, the more determined they are to stop it. When The Prophet takes Rheta and Sean's sister hostage, the race is on to free them and bring down the Brotherhood."

This is the first novel I've read from KJ Dahlen and the first thriller/mystery I've read for 2012. It's also the first book for the blog I'm a book host as. Exciting!

Anyways, this was a pretty good book. I really enjoy thrillers and this held up to my expectations! I was at the edge of my seat the entire time I turned the page. KJ Dahlen did an amazing job with setting up the story and giving out particular information at the right moment. Every time I thought I had the ending figured out, she would throw another loop into the story. I felt just as desperate as Rheta and her partner to get a grasp on this "prophet" and have a happy ending.

Credit must be given to KJ Dahlen for taking a huge risk in the story. At some points she would switch the POV to the psycho, aka the Prophet. A lot of authors just keep the POV in the good guys' court, because it's safer and less of a challenge. However, KJ Dahlen took on this challenge and I believe she did a great job! I was actually interested to see what was going through this guy's head. I'll admit it...I was more interested in his POV at times. Yes, he was completely off his rocker and a cold-hearted son of bitch (excuse my french), but he was interesting. KJ Dahlen, I applaud you.

Okay...I'm an honest person, so I'll be blunt. Sometimes I winced when I was reading, because there were a few grammatical errors that I couldn't look past. I'm an English minor and the more classes I take in writing, the more I notice these things. Usually, I can just ignore them and continue on. Not in this case. Sometimes I had to read the sentence a couple times, so my brain could make sense on what was going on. I try not to point these grammar issues out in my reviews, because I'm not the best at grammar, but...I couldn't just ignore these. I hope that next time she has someone proof-read her rough draft beforehand. That's all I ask.

I had a love-hate with the ending. My mind was blown away by how everything went down at the end! However, I also felt it was sort of anti-climatic and not how I would've ended it. Maybe I would have, but a little differently. I felt like it just...ended. There was a whole bunch of drama and action and excitement that my mind couldn't read fast enough for me, but then after some words and whatever it just...ended. I also felt like there was a huge cliff-hanger, which I love and hate equally. I love when the author leaves you wanting more, but you're not 100% sure there will be more.

Overall, I really liked this book. It was entertaining. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It had me wanting to read more from the author. I believe that Ever After Pr and I will be reading another book by this author. However, I'm not sure if we are and if we are, I'm not positive it'll be a "sequel" for The Prophet: The New Brotherhood. I hope so! Even though I think the author needs to have grammar check, I think she's a wonderful author and this was a good book. Out of five stars I grant this one 4 stars. In all reality, it would be 4.4, but I rounded.

Favorite Character(s): Sean/Michael (Rheta's partner) and oddly the Prophet (I just thought his view point was interesting and out of the norm)
Not-so Favorite Character(s): The Prophet (cold-hearted killer)

Sunday Ketchup

~'Sunday Ketchup' was inspired by The Muse in the Fog's 'Suddenly Sunday' postings. However, mine are going to be a little bit different. Also when I went to spell 'Catchup' I accidentally spelled it wrong and put 'Ketchup'. I thought it was cute, so I kept it. Also, I'm addicted to ketchup! I want one of those ketchup shirts that says "I <3 Ketchup". Wouldn't that be cute? Every week, or whenever I remember, I'm going to post events that happened this past week, things coming up next week, updates, and news. You can join in and post your own 'Sunday Ketchup' postings, just make sure to mention me...if you want ^.^ ~

Happy Sunday everyone! I know it's been a while since I've done one of these posts, but...yeah...school and work are kicking my butt. I'm super stressed. Maybe it was a mistake to take Oral Communications and Comp II (it's a writing class) at the same time. Ugggggh. Anyways...

Past Week Posts:
What's Going to Be Posted This Week?:
On Saturday I'll have 'The Prophet' book review posted. It's the first book I'm reading for Ever After Pr (the blog I'm a host at). ^.^ Besides for that, it'll depend on how much free time I have.

Anything New for the Blog?:
I know I promised a new look and that'll be coming soon. I'm just stuck on the background. I can't decide what color scheme I want. I was thinking maybe blue and black, white and black, green and blue, or something. I'm not 100% sure, but the new look is on the way! Other than that...nothing else.

Tim Horton news:
Same ol', same ol'.

What Came in the Store/Mail?:
Since the last time I posted one of these, I've had a lot of things come in for me. The biggest and most expensive was my new Kindle Fire. ^.^ It's my baby! Besides for that, I've gotten a couple books from Ever After Pr to read and review. I also found a couple e-books from Amazon:

Anything Else?:
Mhmmm, nothing really.

What's new with your blogs?
